Workplace within: Psychodynamics of Organizational Life (MIT Press series on organization studies), by Larry Hirschhorn

The post-industrial age has brought with it a new work environment, complete with new forms of organization and patterns of behavior. It has also created new anxieties for workers and for organizations. In this revealing study, Larry Hirschhorn looks at the social defenses organizations develop to cope with change. Using extended case studies and examples from offices, factories, and social services, he describes why these defenses exist, how they operate, and how they can be reshaped to enhance people's work experience.Unlike traditional studies of the workplace which have tended to focus only on the firm's conscious values, attitudes and norms, "The Workplace Within weaves together psychoanalytic studies, theories of organizations as sociotechnical settings, and conceptions of post-industrial society to uncover the hidden, irrational, and unconscious mechanisms that pattern organizational behavior. It challenges the traditional view that economics or the "bottom line" is the sole, or even the primary, motivating force behind the behavior of work organizations.Hirschhorn examines three major forms of social defense: the basic assumption, the covert coalition, and the organizational ritual. Each is a group behavior that in some way helps contain the anxiety of working; yet each is self-limiting, or even self-defeating. He concludes that the post-industrial work system is double-edged. In supervising total systems of production and working increasingly across departments and units, people are brought closer to the product of their work, while experiencing increased anxiety. Hirschhorn describes the "reparative organization" as one solution to this dilemma; however, he asserts that theultimate resolution lies outside the organization and in the society's culture of work, demanding a reconstruction of our political economy.Larry Hirschhorn is principal and senior research manager at the Wharton Center for Applied Research, and author of "Beyond Mechanization (MIT Press paperback). "The Workplace Within was shaped partly by the author's extensive consulting experience and is unique in integrating both theory and practice to illuminate organizational behaviors. The book is included in the series Organization Studies, edited by John Van Maanen.

Review

The Workplace Within is a deeply ambitious book. It addresses practical human problems in organizations, drawing on solid case data, and at the same time it raises questions at a broad philosophical and policy level about good organizations, how to go beyond social defenses, and the scope of changes required in our political economy to build developmental work cultures...a major contribution toward understanding the felt experience of work in post industrial society...most importantly it represents a methodological breakthrough in that it tells the stories -- successful and failed of organization consulting as a 'applied clinical' practice.

From the Back Cover

Using extended case studies from offices, factories, and social services, he describes why these often irrational processes that fragment and injure individuals within the workplace exist, how they operate, and how they can be reshaped to enhance people's work experience.

The Yacoubian Building, by Alaa Al Aswany

The Yacoubian Building holds all that Egypt was and has become over the 75 years since its namesake was built on one of downtown Cairo's main boulevards. From the pious son of the building's doorkeeper and the raucous, impoverished squatters on its roof, via the tattered aristocrat and the gay intellectual in its apartments, to the ruthless businessman whose stores occupy its ground floor, each sharply etched character embodies a facet of modern Egypt one where political corruption, ill-gotten wealth, and religious hypocrisy are natural allies, where the arrogance and defensiveness of the powerful find expression in the exploitation of the weak, where youthful idealism can turn quickly to extremism, and where an older, less violent vision of society may yet prevail. Alaa Al Aswany's novel caused an unprecedented stir when it was first published in 2002 and has remained the world's best selling novel in the Arabic language since.

Review
"Top of my list is The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswamy (Harper Perennial). The book has been a best seller in its native Egypt and throughout the Arabic world since publication in 2002. Set in downtown Cairo at the time of the 1990 Gulf War, it reveals modern Egyptian life through the eyes of a diverse range of characters an aristocratic playboy, a gay newspaper editor, a religious zealot, childhood sweethearts all of whom live in the same apartment building. Cairo hasn't been so vividly - or sexily - evoked since Naguib Mahfouz's Palace Walk. " --The Guardian

A Fantastic Book...and a word of caution.
By Bee
Bad news first:

I found this book a little difficult to get into for a couple of reasons. One, I am not at all familiar with landscape of Egypt. Second, although I am marrying an Egyptian, and have somewhat of a familiarity for Arabic names, it was still a bit confusing to keep track of each of the characters -- especially with most of them having a nickname or title attached to their name in various parts of the story. I found myself having to back track during the first 30 or so pages to keep each character straight, which was a bit frustrating for a seasoned reader with a supposedly high comprehension level. I know, I know: what should I expect from a book translated from Arabic, about Arabic people, and taking place in an Arabic world? Still, I thought that it merited a warning...

Good news:

This was still an absolutely gripping novel. For those like me who may struggle with the names or places and get a bit frustrated in the initial pages, the story is well worth it. I was soon immersed in the lives of the characters, and began to care for them as if I knew them personally. I was able to relate it to what I know of Egyptian culture, and it opened my eyes to aspects of the culture which I have not personally seen.

In the larger scope of things, it really makes you think about the political/religious/ethnic and just general social issues that surround us. It allows one to think outside of the box and experience a life or lives that you ordinarily would not be able to. Although very sad in parts, it also contained great happiness, and allows you to truly see a beautiful culture at its best, at its worst, at its most twisted, and at its most innocent. A very honest, and very enthusiastic 5 stars.

An absorbing and poetically-written book
By Gen of North Coast Gardening
This is one of those books that comes along once in a great while and has the power to take over one's life for the week or so it takes to read through the book completely. The characters are likeable and relatable, the plot both surprising and inevitable, and the writing is poetic and foreign in a beautiful and intriguing way. Recommended.

Mahfouz Revisited and Egypt Updated
By Arthur C. Hurwitz
Alaa Al Aswany is a social realist writer of Egypt with a style and a methodology not unlike that of Naguib Mahfouz. The difference is, however, that he portraying Egypt in the long term aftermath of the Free Officers' coup de etat, the Arab nationalism of Gamal Abd al-Nasir and its social reforms, and years of corrupt emergency rule. All in a country where the relevance of the Arab nationalism of the 1950's and 1960's is in the past, and largely irrelevant to the real life lives of the Egyptian people.

The title, and the building which is the foci of the novel, is a name and a building with non-Egyptian/Arabic name and an origin in a more cosmopolitan and liberal Egypt of the past. The characters represent various sorts of Egyptian personality types in the downtown area: a rich homosexual, a potential aristocrat of the old pre-Nasir regime lapsed into decadence and stagnancy after falling from relevancy in the new regime, a rich "self made" owner of a chain of stores, one of which is in the ground floor of the Yacoubian Building, and on the roof, representatives of the new and also very poor Egypt: a young woman whose father has died and thus is forced to take a job which includes paid sexual harrassement to support her family, the son of the doorman who is dilligent in his studies and preparations to become a police officer, a servant in the building who is renting a shack on the roof of the building so he can set up a shirt-making store, and others.

What all these characters have in common is that each character makes some sort of dramatic leap from the status quo character portrayed the begining of the novel to some fate, either more promising or resulting in the character's fall from some sort of interim grace. It seems to me that Al Aswany believes that the 50 years of dictatorial rule in Egypt and the 10 years of emergency rule (the novel takes place in 1990) under Mubarak, caused all of the segments of the Egyptian society to become corrupt and decadent. By showing various sorts of Egyptians of various socioeconomic classes, regional origins, and religions, he attempts to illustrate how the country's dictatorial regime has forced and continues to force every slice of the society into corruption, stagnancy, decline and/or decadence.

When the book opens its milleau to us, it is assumed that this dictatorial/decadent/stagnancy state-of-beirng, and mind, has gone on for a long time, for as long as any one can relevantly remember.

Each character represents a different philosophical response to this state-of-stagnancy and an eventual attempt to deal with it. Either to overcome it through love and real interpersonal engagement, or to continue on the same road of decadence and stagnancy, which ultimately leads to the death of the character which is an allegory for Egypt and Egyptian society, honest hard work and dilligence which is thwarted by the corruption and class system of the regime leading that character to first an abstract idealism, and that idealism to his death, another character thinks he can outmanuever the true powers-that-be in the regime, only to discover that he is just as powerless and leverageless against the regime as any of the other less powerful, less influential, or less wealthy characters.

I liked this book but would have trouble understanding it if I had never been to Egypt and was not familiar with either Cairo, the history of Egypt and the evolving urban landscape of Cairo, and Egyptian society. Although the book has literary merit, its primary interest would either to Egyptians and other Arabs, who could "fill in the blanks" not discussed in the novel itself, or people interested in Egypt and its own cultural responses to its current condition. Also, the literary merit of the book is only relevant from the point of view of someone either part of or interested in Arab culture, Egyptian society, and the current state of things in the Arab world. That is why I gave it four starts.

The Letters of Vincent van Gogh (Penguin Classics), by Vincent Van Gogh

"If ever there was any doubt that Van Gogh's letters belong beside those great classics of artistic self-revelation, Cellini's autobiography and Delacroix's journal, this excellent edition dispels it."
—The Times (London)

"Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all."

Few artists' letters are as self-revelatory as Vincent Van Gogh's, and the selection included here, spanning the whole of his artistic career, sheds light on every facet of the life and work of this complex and tortured man. Engaging candidly and movingly with his religious struggles, his ill-fated search for love, his intense relationship with his brother Theo and his attacks of mental illness, the letters contradict the popular image of Van Gogh as an anti-social madman and a martyr to art, showing instead that he was capable of great emotional and spiritual depths. Above all, they stand as an intense personal narrative of artistic development and a unique account of the process of creation.
The letters are linked by explanatory biographical passages, revealing Van Gogh's inner journey as well as the outer facts of his life. This edition includes the drawings that originally illustrated the letters.

Amazon.com Review
This thorough collection of van Gogh's letters has been assembled with an artful eye and sensitivity to the artist's thinking. The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh's epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him.

From Publishers Weekly
Van Gogh was 37 and on the edge of fame when, in 1890, he shot and killed himself. Unable to sell his brilliant canvases, he was utterly dependent upon his younger brother, Theo, to whom most of the letters collected here are written. Anguished by loss of faith after planning to be a priest, disappointed in several once-promising love affairs, he was also so tormented by poverty that one of his artistic breakthroughs occurred when, without proper colors, he brushed in "a garden, green by nature, but painted without actual green, nothing but Prussian blue and chrome yellow." Whether van Gogh's suicide was the inevitable culmination of depression, or due to epilepsy or to professional frustration (he is remembered, beyond his pictures, for razoring off part of his ear), his letters reveal that the end was long contemplated. In 1878, he had written to Theo, "It must be good to die in the knowledge that one has done some truthful work." By the time he put a hole in his chest, he knew he had done that. The letters, edited by de Leeuw, the director of the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, echo the artist's passionate voice, and the connective narrative excerpts other letters that readers may regret not having in full. Integral to the letters are 49 pen-and-ink sketches that evidence van Gogh's development into a creative force. Although each letter possesses an inherent pathos because one knows what lies ahead, van Gogh's epistolary appeal goes beyond melodrama. Often inspired by books despite being a limner of peasant life and the land, he once wrote, "How beautiful Shakespeare is, who else is as mysterious as he is; his language and method are like a brush trembling with excitement and ecstasy."

From Library Journal
This popular edition of selected Van Gogh letters is based on the expanded four-volume Dutch edition De Brieven van Vincent van Gogh (Van Gogh Museum and SDU, 1990). The translations read smoothly and are more elegant than those found in other editions. Covering an 18-year period, this selection of letters aims to capture the spirit of Van Gogh's life rather than offer up yet another chronicle of facts and opinions. Following the beginning section of early letters, sections are organized chronologically by the geographic locale where Van Gogh lived and worked. Editor De Leeuw provides thoughtful explanations that link many letters and introduce each section. Several reproductions of Van Gogh's drawings accompany appropriate letters. As is often the case with one-sided collections of correspondence, one often wishes that letters sent to Van Gogh were as readily available as his responses to them. For larger art collections.?P. An Intimate Look
By BeachReader
I bought this book several years ago in a college bookstore. How fortunate these students were to have been able to read and discuss this with others! I have had a long interest in Van Gogh and found this book to be fascinating, an almost voyeuristic look into his short life. I am glad to see that it is available * * and would hope that people now seeing the traveling Van Gogh portraiture exhibit might read it.
De Leeuw has compiled letters covering over 25 years of Van Gogh's life, letters that offer the reader an intimate look into the artist's thoughts and emotions. He writes about his friendships, his family, his attempts at love affairs, his religious beliefs and questions, and most importantly, about his art. These letters reveal him as anything but the anti-social person often portrayed in the past, with the ones about his relationship with his brother Theo being particularly touching.
Van Gogh was a prolific correspondent and an absolutely wonderful writer. His prose is remarkable--he could have been a writer as well as an artist. These letters shed light on the inner thoughts and the inspiration for his art and show him as a person of great passion and compassion.

The Spirit of a Great Artist
By A Customer
While Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, this compilation of his letters combined with a more in-depth study of his work has intensified my appreciation of him as both an artist and a person. I've always felt it was impossible to separate this particular artist from his work and reading his letters has led me to a better understanding of why this is. These letters beautifully capture his soul and spirit and reveal him as the caring, expressive and socially aware person that he was. The combination of strength of character and vulnerability expressed in these letters explain both the intensity and sensitivity of his work.

"the best way to love God is to love many things"
By frumiousb
A very fine collection of the letters, with multiple sides of VVG revealed. To read a collection of letters by an artist whose work you know very well is to invite yourself to take a look at him as a person. As a person, I found that I liked him best in these letters when he was struggling with his religion, his art, and his purpose. I'm glad that Roskill didn't make a selection that focused solely on the more famous and theatrical depressions.
I don't agree that this work reveals Van Gogh as a writer. For me, they definitely confirmed his status as a painter. At his best in these letters, he's painting with words.
Which doesn't make it a less interesting read. I found this a good adjunct to taking a look at the work again, it added an extra dimension to experiencing him as a painter.
Well worth the time it takes.

Excellent - I own these from many states
By Steve Merrill
We have used the various state gazetteers from Delorme for many years and we have not found anything better. They tell you everything down to seasonal jeep trails. However, there is one area that they don't always make clear. We often travel on unpaved roads. These may be anything from well-graded smooth gravel to rough and rutted two-tracks. In the Delorme system, these all seem to be marked the same. I don't have a suggestion for improvement, but we have learned to make our final judgement about a backcountry route somewhere based on what we see on the ground.

A must for backroaders
By the toy cannon
We've gotten several of these for various states over the years and love them when travelling off the beaten paths and away from busy roads. Also helpful for finding detours when roads are closed by construction or wrecks.

it's of great use to me when I travel into public lands
By Betty B.
Purchased this atlas mainly for the latitude and longitude coordinates. Coupled with my GPS, it's of great use to me when I travel into public lands.
