Well researched, valuable reference book

As the editorial reviews state above, this is a reference book for libraries and specialists. The book is thorough, and the writing academic in nature. It is best used as a reference work. Anyone who is interested in such things as the development of rock music in China, the evolution of film, the role of newspapers in Chinese society, how Chinese spend their leisure time, and so on, will find this book a valuable resource. Each chapter ends with a section called "A to Z" which serves as a kind of review of the major names, terms, and events discussed in the chapter. I found this useful.

Since I am doing research on Chinese pop culture, I did read through the entire book and found it well written and well organized. It is a welcome addition to my library and I recommend it.

2007 Edition: More Complete, Great for Planning

So the latest edition of Lonely Planet's Europe guide is out.
Note that most of the earlier reviews posted here refer to the previous edition(s), and there have been improvements in this new one!
Most importantly, this book now covers ALL European countries, including little-visited Belarus and Ukraine. It has basic coverage of European Russia, too.

The prices and other practical details really seem to have been updated specifically for this book - unlike in certain earlier shoestring guides, which simply seem to have been compiled by picking info from the already published (few years old) individual country guides.
So the info in this one is pretty correct as of 2006 state of affairs - that's when it was researched. Be prepared for some changes, of course, especially in some of the still rapidly-changing Eastern European countries.

The contents include the usual practical details all LP guides provide: not just an overview of sights and history, but practical matters like accomodation and transport details, all with actual prices (remember, these do change!), as well as useful info on things like getting visas and crossing borders.
Coverage of individual countries definitely varies though.
You will still find that the most popular Western European countries are covered in pretty good detail, certainly enough for an "All-Europe-Trip", while coverage of Eastern European countries is much more brief, in case of less visited ones really sketchy - hence the 4 stars only.
For more obscure countries like Belarus or Ukraine, this guide only provides detailed info on the capital and at best one or two other towns/cities, or perhaps just a brief overview of the rest of the country.

So this book is great value if you are still in the planning stages of your trip, and simply want to have an overview of the entire continent, prices, visa matters and all, to help you decide where to go.
It will also be an adequate guide to take along if you are planning a whirlwind tour of the continent, concentrating on the more established tourist destinations, with only brief forays to less visited countries.
However if you are planning to spend any length of time in Eastern Europe, I definitely recommend getting LP's separate Eastern Europe guide - it covers it in maybe three times as much detail as this book.
If you have a specific interest in a few countries rather than the whole continent, get the individual country guides to those ones.
But if you have only a summer holiday to tour our continent, you will probably find this book has enough information for you.

Enlightening & "The Real Deal"

My Kid (just 20) is best friends with a French Family who was stationed in town for a while. He had the opportunity to go to Europe and live with his best friends family as they traveled throughout Europe. This book and the Rick Steve's Book were very good guides as to what to wear; what to take; where to stay when family is not available; insight stuff that even the locals didn't know. Well worth the money.

The manual is good but can't beat the factory manual

This manual is good and I used it quite a bit until I found a factory manual. They are still around. Both originals and factory reproductions are available for all of the two cylinders if you look. I would also recommend buying a factory parts manual. They are excellent and the way they are compiled they are very helpful when trying to figure out how to put something together.

About the Author
Carmelo Virgillo (Ph.D , Indiana University, Bloomington) is Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages at Arizona State University, Tempe, where he taught Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian at the undergraduate and graduate levels from 1965 to 1993. In addition to serving as coordinator of Portuguese and Hispanic literature, he directed Arizona State University's programs in Florence and Siena, Italy (1982 and 1990). He was also book review editor of the Latin American Digest. His publications include Correspond�ncia de Machado de Assis com Magalh�es de Azeredo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Instituto Nacional do Livro Minist�rio da Educa��o y Cultura, 1969), Woman as Myth and Metaphor in Latin American Literature with Naomi E. Lindstrom (Columbus University of Missouri Press, 1985), and Blbliograf�a anal�tico-descritiva de Henriqueta Lisboa (Rio de Janeiro: Jos� Olympia Editora, 1992). He also authored and co-authored numerous articles and essays on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish, Spanish-American, and Brazilian literature. In addition, he was a contributor to the Suplemento liter�rio do Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil). The recipient of several nominations for excellence in teaching, he has been cited by the Italian Ministry of Education for his career-long development of and contributions to the promotion of Italian studies in the United States. He is currently researching a new book on Hispanic civilization.

Edward H. Friedman (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University) is Chancellor’s Professor of Spanish and Professor of Comparative Literature at Vanderbilt University. His primary field of research is early modern Spanish literature, with special emphasis on picaresque narrative, the writings of Cervantes, and the Comedia. He also has worked widely in contemporary narrative and drama. His books include Cervantes in the Middle: Realism and Reality in the Spanish Novel (2006), The Unifying Concept: Approaches to the Structure of Cervantes Comedias, The Antiheroine’s Voice: Narrative Discourse and Transformations of the Picaresque, Wit’s End: An Adaptation of Lope de Vega’s La dama boba (performed by Vanderbilt University Theatre as part of its 2006-2007 season). He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Scholar Program, and the National Humanities Center. He is editor of the Bulletin of the Comediantes and has served as president of the Cervantes Society of America. Nominated by Brigham Young University, he was selected for the Sigma Delta Pi "Orden de Don Quijote" Award in 2005. The recipient of teaching awards at Arizona State University and Indiana University, he was presented the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at Vanderbilt in 2006.

L. Teresa Valdivieso (Ph.D. 1975) is Professor Emerita of Spanish at Arizona State University. In her many years at Arizona State, she has been Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Spanish Section, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, Chair of the Arizona State University Education Abroad Committee, organizer and chair of the Undergraduate Committee, member of the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Council, and of the Language Articulation Task Force. She also was Visiting Professor at Middlebury College, Lecturer at the Universidad Aut�noma de Guadalajara (Mexico) and the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain). She is the author of Espa�a: Bibliograf�a de un teatro silenciado, Negocios y comunicaciones, and co-author of Studia Hispanica Medievalia, La mujer hispana en el mundo: sus triunfos y sus retos, Voces y textos literarios del Ecuador, and most recently Presencia de la mujer hispana (2004), and Madrid en la literatura y las artes (2006). She is a founding-member and past president of the Asociaci�n de Literatura Femenina Hisp�nica, vice-president of the Asociaci�n Hisp�nica de Humanidades, senior bibliographer of the Modern Language Association, and recently elected vice-president of Spanish Professionals in America. She continues to teach at Arizona State University. In 1980 she was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for excellence in teaching; in 2002 she received the Outstanding Faculty Committee to Teaching and Learning Award, and in 2007 has been awarded the title of Honors Disciplinary Faculty.

Spanish literature made easy

Aproximaciones is a wonderful tool for the student learning about Spanish literature. The selections are well analyzed by the author and the biographies provide an overview of the cultures and perspectives of the different time periods. The chronological order of the readings makes it easy to understand the different stages of the Spanish literature and the various literary movements affecting the arts, the philosophy, and society of medieval to modern times.

This is an extremely helpful book for those who start studying literary analysis in Spanish as well as for very green literary scholars. The introduction to the special terms is easy to follow and the english equivalents are in their right places and don't distract you. Go ahead, you'll love using it in your Spanish or literary analysis class!

About the Author

Dr Humayon Dar is the Chief Executive Office of BMB Islamic UK Ltd, a Shari'a advisory and structuring firm.

He is a prominent player in the Shari'a advisory field and has been associated with most of the recent innovative developments in Islamic banking and finance including: structuring Islamic put options, Shari'a-compliant short-selling techniques, and Islamic financial futures contracts. His most recent contribution to the Islamic financial industry is the first-ever Islamic SRI screening methodology.

As CEO of BMB Islamic UK Ltd, and a member of its own and other Shari'a Supervisory Boards, Dr Dar is actively involved in enhancing Shari'a authenticity of Islamic financial products. His work was acknowledged by Euromoney in 2006 and 2007, when his team received the 'Best Islamic Advisory and Assurance' award for two consecutive years.

Dr Dar holds a B.Sc (Hons) and M.Sc. (both in Islamic Economics) from the International Islamic University Islamad, where he studied with a number of top Islamic jurists and Muslim thinkers. He also has a M.Phil. and Ph.D. (both in Economics) from Cambridge University, where he conducted research on Islamic Finance. His post-doctoral research has focused exclusively on Islamic economics, banking and finance.

Dr Dar is consulted widely by corporations, governments and regulatory bodies on matters related to Islamic banking and finance, and is frequently interviewed by print and electronic media including the Financial Times, BBC and CNN.

Umar F. Moghul is a lawyer with the US law firm of Murtha Collins LLP. He practices in the areas of Islamic law, finance and investments, private equity, and mergers and acquisitions.

Mr Moghul has represented a number of financial institutions, business, joint ventures and high net-worth individuals in a variety of cutting-edge financing transactions structured according to Islamic principles.

He has advised on conventional and Islamic private equity transactions (both controlling and non-controlling). In the realm of real estate, Mr Moghul's practice has included the establishment of real estate investment funds and one-off financing transactions, a unique Islamic warehouse financing transaction, and the design and documentation of novel Islamic residential, commercial and construction financing products.

Mr Moghul is a lecturer in law at the University of Conneticut School of Law and an adjunct faculty member at the Western New England College School of Law where he teaches Islamic Law. He has published several articles and spoken at numerous forums regarding Islamic law and Islamic finance.

Mr Moghul earned his J.D from Temple University and his B.A and M.A from the University of Pennsylvania.
