About the Author

Mostafa Khalil is a senior staff engineer at VMware. He is a senior member of VMware Global Support Services and has worked for VMware for more than 13 years. Prior to joining VMware, he worked at Lotus/IBM. A native of Egypt, Mostafa graduated from the Al-Azhar University’s School of Medicine, and practiced medicine in Cairo. He became intrigued by the mini computer system used in his medical practice and began to educate himself about computing and networking technologies. After moving to the United States, Mostafa continued to focus on computing and acquired several professional certifications. He is certified as VCDX (3, 4, & 5), VCAP (4 & 5)-DCD, VCAP4-DCA, VCP (2, 3, 4, & 5), MCSE, Master CNE, HP ASE, IBM CSE, and Lotus CLP. As storage became a central element in the virtualization environment, Mostafa became an expert in this field and delivered several seminars and troubleshooting workshops at various VMware public events in the United States and around the world.

Incredibly Detailed Storage Information

The book is filled with a treasure trove of historical knowledge that includes not only how storage (both as an industry and as it relates to VMware) evolved to what it is today, but why it evolved the way it did. You'll learn all about the VMFS file system and how to take advantage of it for all sorts of protocols and environments in both design and troubleshooting. This is simply a MUST HAVE book for anyone doing shared storage in VMware virtual environments as both reference material and a design aid, and will continue to be relevant long past the release of future vSphere 5.X products.

This book has it all!

This is the storage book that I have been waiting for! Being relatively new to Storage/DataCenter, I've frustrated with with every other book and whitepaper because they either assume you are able to place things in context, or don't go into enough detail. This book satisfied all of my complaints with other materials. The author does an excellent job starting out with the context (and in some cases history behind how we got here in the first place) and delving into the material. I really like how the topics are covered from all different angles, the author showed us how we should accomplish tasks with the GUI and command line. It was very important to me that both were covered. It was also great the author included small bits of the storage vendor's material as well. Learning the VMWare part is important, and the focus of the book, but without the other side (storage vendor) you don't have the full picture. I was mainly looking for iSCSI info (which there was plenty of) but I ended up taking away a lot more useful knowledge. Like all the other reviewers, I consider this the definitive vSphere 5 storage book and would highly recommend anyone dealing with vSphere and SAN/NAS purchase this immediately.

Good book for block-based information

This book contains extremely detailed information about block storage as it relates to vSphere. If you're running an environment consisting of FC, FCoE or iSCSI, this book will come in handy in endless ways.

However...

If you're looking for information regarding the implementation, design or inner workings of file-based (NFS) storage as it relates to vSphere, this is where the book falls flat. There is a smattering of info on how to work with VAAI primitives for NFS, but beyond that, the entire subject of NFS-based storage is barely mentioned at all. If you are looking for a book to help you understand the inner workings of the file-based datastore and how that works in relation to vSphere, keep looking.

Adequate but not the best....

I can appreciate what the author's were trying to do here: an atlas in a high yield question book style format. While I applaud the effort, I think the book falls short. The pictures are great but the explanations for these pictures are not adequate to learn a whole lot from. Not as high yield as I would hope, with some odd ball pics that even after you review the answer leaves you scratching your head. The format is also a bit difficult to review in a quick manner as there are too many pics on one page with the explanations all the way at the end of the section. Would like to see a version where the answers are on the very next page so you don't have to constantly flip back and forth.

Overall, not worth the price. I was using it for OKAP and boards and found it pretty useless. The pics are nice though.

This is a good book for an absolute beginner

This is a good book for an absolute beginner. But I'm pretty serious about the 'absolute beginner' part. Most of the songs are extremely simplified down to just a quarter and eighth note melody. The melodies themselves seem to also be simplified. I.e. They are not a true version of the original song score melodies. It appears they've tried to stay away from low and high register notes, which means if you're playing this for a violin, you'll be primarily working the D and A strings. It's like old mcdonald for disney music.

Great Book - Love It!

My daughter is a huge Disney fan and just started learning the violin - so I had to buy this book for her! It's great - it has all the classics and some of them are not hard at all. This is definitely a beginner book, which is exactly what I wanted. I learned to play Let's Go Fly A Kite today with my daughter. So much joy!

Fun, but not solo's

As still being a beginner some of the songs are a little difficult, but makes it very fun to learn. However, without hearing the songs, some of them are a little, for lack of a better word, weird. It seems that a lot, if not all, are written for use with an orchestra and not as solo's.

For the price it's not a bad buy and it does have some very memorable songs in it which does make it more fun to play. Overall, it's good for kids to have something to encourage them or for people who are fans of a lot of Disney music.

About the Author
About the author Professor Roger Fletcher completed his MA at the University of Cambridge in 1960 and his PhD at the University of Leeds in 1963. He was a lecturer at the University of Leeds from 1963 to 1969, then Principal Scientific Officer at AERE Harwell until 1973. He then joined the University of Dundee where he is Professor of Optimization and holds the Baxter Chair of Mathematics. In 1997 he was awarded the prestigious Dantzig Prize for fundamental contributions to algorithms for nonlinear optimization, awarded jointly by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Mathematical Programming Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Invaluable insight

This book is a great mix of insight and rigor. The text is mixed with mathematical propositions/proofs and a lively writing style. The proofs aren't gratuitous, as opposed to most texts, but meant to build insight and demonstrate properties of algorithms. After each proof Fletcher doesn't meander in the weeds of the math, but he takes a step back and provides insight about WHAT this means for a particular algorithm.

Fletcher then highlights the algorithms by bringing in his own experience and provides insight on how the algorithms work on real problems, not just what the theory says. He writes that many algorithms, including several developed by him, are inferior to other variants on real-world problems. (Fletcher is the "F" in BFGS, DFP, and Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient.)

This coupling of mathematical rigor with candid insight makes this book invaluable.

On the negative side, I have found (as others have noted) a few typos, including a couple obvious ones in the pseudocode. This book is meant "to teach a man to fish," not "give a man a fish." So, if you're looking for something like Numerical Recipes that gives you verbatim software to type into your computer, then Fletcher's book isn't for you. However, after digesting Fletcher's math and insight, I have been able to reduce the computation of my (formerly NR-based) codes by an order of magnitude on some standard-battery optimizations.

Indispensable

I'm a software engineer with only a BS in computer science who worked in a team translating a Matlab prototype of in-house non-linear multilevel optimizer to C++. I had no theoretical background in optimization and, during the time I was working on the project, I did not have (or bother) a chance to sit and study the subject. When I finally did and found this book, all the thick and widespread clouds over my head that persisted for years started clearing up immediately. This book may not cover the state of the art algorithms or theory but is a great place to start. It gives us a solid foundation before moving on to more specialized or theoretical topics on our own (or motivate us enough to go back to school!).

Paperback reprint of 2nd Ed. from 1987

This is a good book from an award winning author and researcher in this subject. However, the 2000 publication date shown refers to the release of the paperback version. There is no new content since 1987 when the 2nd ed. was originally published in hardcover.
I prefer Dennis and Schnabel's _Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations_ for Newton-derived methods in unconstrained optimization, but Fletcher's book has the added material on constrained optimization (Part 2) that makes it more complete if one wants a single reference that covers the gamut of optimization.

Practical and useful overview of therapy with clients with ID

This is a nice overview of therapy modalities for clients with ID, including sections on individual, group, and family/couple therapy. There is also a section on other issues, such as ethics, training, and efficacy. A great reference, and introductory text that would probably be most useful accompanied by a class or other training/supervision.

"Three newly-orphaned sisters, finding themselves left to their own devices"

Highly enjoyable work from 1890; the author was an English emigrant to Australia, and this is set (mostly) in 1880 Melbourne.
The story opens with the three sisters all in their 20s and newly orphaned. Their strange, taciturn father has just died, (their mother - a charming and cultured woman passed away some years ago) and they are planning an exciting future.
Leaving their rural cottage they settle in Melbourne, where they are under the protection of the son of the family solicitor....
As they gradually move into 'society' and find themselves taken up by the childless Duff-Scotts, their lives are to change at a rate of knots, with romance, misunderstandings and a huge secret which is to alter things forever...
A little 'Mills and Boone' in places, notably when describing the adorable Mr Kingscote Yelverton, the author somehow manages to carry it off and produces an extremely enjoyable novel.
