Good but not great

I may have purchased this on an impulse, or maybe I'm not quite committed to read this as recommended, but it basically .gives several scenarios of difficult situations in the work place.

I was showing my co-workers and they kind of just laughed about it. There seems to be some helpful tips in there, but really I think that one can handle any situation best by experience.

Anyone who feels they need to memorize a book full of responses is missing the underlying problem = confidence. And if you have confidence then you simply learn to trust your own thinking. Besides - it would be almost impossible to memorize all this. Just not practicle. People need simple solutions that can be applied to lots of situations not scripts to remember.

A Concise, Deep Devotional That Bridges Head Knowledge To Heart Wisdom

This book took me on a journey to evaluate my views on godliness in the present-day church. The devotional readings cover the messy issues that the city of Corinth was dealing with, and they certainly relate to the messy issues that we deal with today - whether in the church or in any organization where people are involved. Style and grace jump from the pages of each reading on godly freedom, to embrace the reader that is ready for the truth that it leads to.

I love that the author treasures transparency enough to reveal some of her own struggles, for example, with feeling inadequate as a teacher. But she doesn’t stop there. She skillfully bridges the portion of that day’s reading back to the Word of God. Reading this book will give readers a grounded-in-Scripture loving “push” to overcome whatever might have been keeping them stuck in misconceptions.

Rebecca has a knack for explaining His truths in a clear, concise manner that is highly applicable to everyday living. At the end of each reading, there is a short sentence or paragraph for “Praying the Word” and another for “Applying the Word.” These are laser-sharp focused on the main point for the day. As I was reading, I couldn’t help but imagine that she intentionally planned this out with purpose and passion, to help those of us who are busy and on a tight schedule. She has taken the time to distill the truth nuggets she found in the Word of God, so that we can benefit right away from the gold. Thank you Rebecca! It is such an honor for me to be among the first to read and review this book.

A Practical and Useful Devotional

"Godly Freedom" is a daily devotional based on the first book of Corinthians. There are twenty-five devotions in total.

What I enjoyed the most about this devotional is the stories Rebecca Livermore shares and the section dedicated toward application.

I find that most devotionals today, do not include a section toward application. How one applies the Word of God practically into their life. Which is why I appreciated and gleaned from this devotional, because it's one of my personal struggles.

All and all, I found this to be a practical and useful devotional, which I highly recommend.

Godly Freedom is exactly what the opening of the book promises it to be, practical. One of the down sides of many devotionals is the fact that they inadvertently make God's word seem inaccessible to the average person. This book does just the opposite. It reminds you that simply meditating On God's word breads life and hope and freedom. Rebecca is a great writer and her style makes the content of 1 Corinthians so accessible. I would recommend this devotional to anyone as a tool for their devotional life. The daily readings are short but stimulating.

About the Author
Matthew Swaim works at Sacred Heart Radio in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the producer of "The Son Rise Morning Show," a nationally syndicated program on the EWTN global Catholic radio network. He holds a B.S. degree in Media Communications (2002) from Asbury College.

Though serving in many non-Catholic Christian ministries prior to his conversion, Swaim entered the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil of 2005, and his "zeal of conversion" brings an added excitement to his practice of the faith.

He and his wife Colleen reside in Cincinnati, Ohio.

not quite digital praying, but wow.. he hits the mark

I found this book to be very interesting and truly thought provoking. In an age where so many of us are now tied to our computers, our smart phones, chat, messaging, email, voicemail, twitter, facebook.... people are just trying to feel connected in somewhere. What I gathered from the book is God truly has a real place in this digital era -- whether through disciplined or non-disciplined prayer -- He is there. Although I am not Catholic, it was interesting to read about the different patron saints in the back of the book -- patron saint of the internet, sexual temptation, television, authors, publishers, advertisers, etc. If we are to make disciples of all nations -- we must go where the nations (the people) are. they are in the digital realm today and as Christians (Catholic and catholic)we must meet them there. Thank you Matt for the very interesting discussion on this important topic.

Become aware of the digital obstacles to prayer

In his new book, Prayer in the Digital Age (Liguori, paperback, 160 pages), Matt Swaim" probes the relationship between technology and prayer. Among many topics, he considers the difficulty of silence in our noisy world, our discomfort with God's own quietness, the emptiness of virtual identities, and the temptation to consume too much information. Each of these obstacles hinders our prayer life, Matt explains, and each one has been amplified in our digital world.

Despite the title's suggestion, Prayer in the Digital Age doesn't deal specifically with tools like Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. The book is more abstract than practical, but that's a needed approach for a world that overvalues pragmatism. Most people become enamored by a new digital tool and dive right in without considering its effects. Matt's book, on the other hand, teaches us to detect the effects of technology. With this awareness, we can be more confident that we are using technology and not the other way around.

Prayer in the Digital Age is definitely not a beginner's prayer book. Matt leans on giants like St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John of the Cross. And he philosophizes on hope and happiness, gauging how technology affects the "summa bonum"--the highest good in life.

All this means that the book is not a quick read, but I actually count that as a positive. Matt forces you to chew, contemplate, and even pray through his words--it doesn't take many pages to attract you toward silence--a welcome relief to the shallowness we typically wade in through the blogosphere.

Another great component is the book's Appendix, which covers "Patron Saints of the Digital Age." Each entry features a saint's name, their patronage, and a short biography describing how they influence digital culture. As we consider how to respond to technology, this Appendix stands as a great source for both guidance and prayers.

My only qualm with the book is that it focuses primarily on technology's negative effects on prayer. In many ways, I think prayer can actually be aided by new tools. But that's not to say that Matt is an alarmist by any measure. In the book, Matt acts as both a digital tour guide and a spiritual medic. He points out the subtle, oft-neglected dangers of the digital world, but instead of just stopping there he provides antidotes for each.

If you're looking to learn the basics of prayer or some practical ways that technology can help you pray, this might not be your book. But if you want to recognize the spiritual dangers lurking within the digital world, check out Prayer in the Digital Age.

A WOW read that will impact your life!

Wow. I just finished this book this weekend, and I'm still left with that overwhelming impression: wow. It was not only what I needed to read when I needed to read it, it was a gem of a book. Swaim doesn't try to be a theologian, but comes at his topic with all the practicality and sensibility of someone who struggles just like the rest of us. His observations ring true, because he's speaking what's been niggling in the back of my mind. I especially enjoyed how he suggests solutions, as opposed to just ranting about how bad things are now. One of my favorite books so far this year. HIGHLY recommended.

Devlin White, Duke of Winterbourne, is the last of a great line of Black Witches. With the death of his father, his remaining siblings has renounced the black arts for white and left for the new world, only he remains to carry on the family name and glory. He receives a request from Lord Tamor, demon lord of his land, to investigate the latest draugr sightings in the countryside just outside his territory, far more numerous than ever before. The vampires whose territory it is refuses demon assistance, preferring that of a renown and infamous witch instead.

When Devlin accepts the mission, he decides to leave behind his beloved ward, Midnight, who he treasures above all. The reason? Midnight is a draugr as well, a living corpse made by Devlin's own special magic, and until White can figure out why or who has called these draugrs from the grave, he doesn't want Midnight close to the problem or Midnight may be influenced as well.

Powerful magic is at work and the culprit clever at hiding themselves and the motives behind their actions. When Midnight appears on the scene despite Devlin's orders, he catches the attention of the person behind the draugr attacks. Then the race is on to find out who is responsible for the draugrs and stop them before they take control of the one being Devlin loves, whether he knows it or not.

Midnight continues our journey through the different territories of the world that makes up The Dance With The Devil series. Each book contains either overlapping characters or mentions characters/beings that are central to the next book. Midnight's focus is on the walking dead. We know them as zombies. People or beings called from the grave, animated for some or someone's purpose. Midnight, the character, of the title is a unique draugr, created by Devlin White himself and another sorcerer, when just a boy. With snow white skin, blue hair, nails and eyes only to give away his status as a walking dead, he is otherwise perfection to look upon with powers of his own. He is an innocent among evil or those to whom evil or black magic are constant companions. Midnight is also deeply in love with Devlin and doesn't know how to get Devlin to look at him differently. Every aspect of Midnight will claim the reader's compassion and instill him into our hearts, so beautifully is he realized. In Devlin White, Derr draws our attention to the witches in her universe and their companions. I loved Devlin White who continues her rolecall of aristocratic main characters. He is elegant, wry, and aware of his status without being autocratic and unduly harsh. He is a wonderful construct among many here. I found his feelings towards Midnight especially authentic. He has raised Midnight since he was a boy. In the back of his mind, he wonders if his feelings toward Midnight are appropriate, if he is not taking advantage in some way of Midnights total reliance on him. Devlin recognizes his love for Midnight, but doesn't want to recognize at what level that love exists. It is a touchy emotional terrain he has to navigate over and Derr does a wonderful job of helping us understand not only his frustration with their relationship but Midnight's as well because we get to "listen" to both sides of the argument they are having with themselves and each other. Barra, his man servant, is equally memorable as he is a "wolf elf" to use the term coined by a dragon. A mongrel who is hurt by the term and gentle in spirit. Barra is such an interesting character all by himself, made more so by his interactions with others, especially a certain knight and his dragon.

Yes, that would be dragon, and where there are dragons, there are also knights, a goblin or two, an angel, imp, vampires, and several sorcerers as well. Derr throws the whole complement of mystical and supernatural beings at us not only in this story but the entire series. And each and every being comes through as believable, from their actions to skin color.

Derr's vivid description extends to her settings, where the mist lies cold upon your face, the rains soak your clothes and the fog obscures the frightening creatures hunting you. She doesn't just inform you of the danger but makes you feel each second of every minute of the menace and perils facing our protagonists. She can make your heart race and your breathe quicken along with Devlin's as he faces down one opponent after another. Derr finds subtle ways to endear her quirky characters to you even when they are characters that exist towards the edges of the story. There is no character or stray plot thread that can ever be considered a "throwaway" in a Derr novel. Somehow, someway, that fact, that character will make a reappearance and resolve a plot point you hadn't considered before.

Midnight is a solid 5 star story in the middle of a wonderful 5 star series. Megan Derr really deserves such a larger audience for her stories and her talent, both of which encompasses many gifts as well as wild and wonderful elements. From supernatural detectives, a bar where everyone knows your name even if it be mystical in nature, action/adventure stories as told by demons and love lorn vampires, there is something for everyone here. Start at the beginning or start here. Just don't let this series or this book pass you by!

What a story!

I bought this book with some trepidation. I don't like zombies. I love fantasy, but the undead are the one thing that still irk me terribly. I can't believe how much I loved this book! The author made the situations seem so plausible. I liked the explanation, there were no unanswered questions. I really felt for the characters and I wanted them all to be happy in the end. While I was reading it, my mind would wander back to the story in the middle of the day, it just wouldn't leave me alone. Once I finished I was really sad. I hope Ms. Derr will consider a sequel!

A Magical Read

I think this is one of the few Zombie stories I have read that I truly enjoyed. Mind you Midnight is not your typical brain-eating, rotting corpse type zombie. In fact it is this total uniqueness of Midnight that drives most of the story. The action is richly described and there is a little romance and plenty of odd characters to be entranced by. Would love to read more about them in other books.

A great way to learn the who and what of the VC industry

While this book was written at the height of the Internet boom and contains nothing but some intimations of the subsequent crash (some of the VCs stated that they suspected returns would turn negative sometime in the near term), it is a fascinating capturing of the history of the venture capital industry in the words of those that built it. It is not a book on how to become a VC or how to submit your b-plan in a way to attract VC money. If you want books on getting investment money, I recommend - The Venture Capital Cycle - by Paul Gompers or for angel money - Angel Investing - by Mark Van Osnabrugge.

The book begins with a very short summary of the growth of the VC industry after WWII and then presents the VCs in five groups. It begins with the "Fast Forward" or the hot Internet and computer based VCs. Then come the "Beginnings" - the group after WWII that built the industry. A contrast is made with the next two groups, the East Coast versus the West Coast VCs. Finally, a group is presented in Visions.

Each of the VCs is presented with a little drawing in the WSJ style. I think this book is worthwhile just to get to know some of the big names, where they work - or used to work (there have been some changes since 2000) - and what projects these firms and people did. It can help in building professional associations let alone dinner conversation.

Is it a must read? I don't think so. However, if you are interested in the venture capital industry I think this would be a very good way to get some understanding of the terrain the industry has occupied and who some of the movers and shakers are (and were).
