Review

A welcome addition to the bookshelves of missionary literature. Dr. Peters has done a remarkable job in dealing with the fundamental issues of missions today. It is truly a study book and should be studied thoroughly by all who have any interest in the field of missions.
-Calvary Review

A major work on missions from an evangelical viewpoint . . . a good job of setting forth the biblical teaching on missions and refuting modern liberal alternatives.
-The Banner of Truth

Throughout the book, certain emphases come through loud and clear: the theocentricity of the Christian missions, the importance of proclamation, the centrality of the local church and the lordship of Christ. A solid and significant contribution to the literature on missiology.
-Eternity

Probably no specifically missionary book has ever undertaken as profound and comprehensive a treatment of the subject as this one. The distinctiveness of the book is the way in which it unifies and integrates the whole range of theological themes in and around the idea of missions. There is here a view of missions that is authentically biblical and soundly theological, and in the inimitable style of Professor George W. Peters.
-Alliance Witness

A thorough survey . . ."
-Christianity Today

This book is scholarly, spiritual and easy reading because of the warm missionary compassion that flows through its chapters.
-Presbyterian Journal

A Biblical Theology of Missions
By Mondok
This book just showed up in my office one day. I'm thankful that books find their way into my hands. This book is the most thorough work on missiology I've ever read. I'll be honest, I don't like to mark up my books (especially the ones that have that new book smell), but I marked up, circled, and note scribbled everywhere in this book.

"It is my impression that the Bible is not a book about theology as such, but rather, a record of theology in mission - God in action in behalf of the salvation of mankind."

George W. Peters writes like an academic, but it's good for you to read a little over your head (in my case, a lot over my head).

How about this:

"The Bible is the basis and source of faith and not the result of faith."

Pretty good, huh? You wish you said that.

Everyone that is serious about going into the mission field or serious about teaching about missions should have this book in his or her library. I'll refer to this book over and over through out my ministry, I'm sure.

A biblical and theological argument for missions
By Commissionary
Why you should read this book...

-Helps you develop a solid missionary theology that is biblically sound

-Defends missiology as a legitimate (and central) theological discipline

-Emphasizes a Trinitarian missionary theology, with special emphasis on the centrality of Christ

-Very practical for both the individual and the church

-Expounds on the definition and role of a missionary

Favorite Quotes...

The Great Commission does not make Christianity a missionary religion. The latter is such because of its source, nature, and total design. The apostles became missionaries not because of a commission but because Christianity is what it is and because of the indwelling Holy Spirit who is an outgoing and witnessing Spirit...Thus, if the particular words of the Great Commission had never been recorded or preserved, the missionary thrust and responsibility of the church would not be in the least affected. It prospers wherever Christianity is truly known, thoroughly believed, genuinely experienced, and implicitly obeyed. (p173)

A missionary is not one who has gone out, but one who has been sent out. (p252)

Let us not hurry until the call has matured. Too many are running, not necessarily without a call of God, but without a matured call of God. (p285)

The gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Bible is the only and sufficient remedy for this basic need. The missionary, therefore, must remain constant in the proclamation of the gospel of God. Only thus is he loyal and true to the call of God. (p288)

Christianity can never be disassociated from Christ as the eternal Son of God, the historic Son of Man, and the present glorified Lord, Mediator and High Priest at the right hand of the throne of God. Christ is the very essence of Christianity. (p346)

A church that does not recognize the primacy of missions deprives herself of the most intimate relationship with her Lord, fails to identify herself with the primary purpose of God, robs her membership of the deepest experiences of the Holy Spirit, and denies the world the greatest blessings the Lord in grace has provided. She ceases to be truly Christian. (p350)

Same as 3rd Edition
By Ernest P.
This was required material for my Programming Logic class. This book is 98% identical to the 3rd edition. The review questions, debugging exercises and programming exercises are all the same! There were a few words or sentences added to the chapter content, but it is essentially unchanged.

The content of the textbook itself is pretty solid and helpful for gaining an understanding of how to design an algorithm. I plan to keep a copy for personal reference. The pseudocode structure takes a bit of time to get used to, and will likely be the cornerstone of your curriculum. My class had the opportunity to translate our pseudocode into Python, which proved to be quite challenging.

The books uses psudeocode for examples i.e. fake code. I understand that the focus of the book is on the general concepts of programming but it seems to me that these concepts could just as easily be learned with examples from an actual programming language(s). It would be more practical that way.

Review
Review from previous edition: "Oxford Handbook of Prehospital Care: ...a concise book which is targeted directly to our profession...this one book is directly focused on the workings of the medic outside of a hospital environment. Just what you need out on the road, when you never know what
the next emergency will be."

--Jeff Pittman, Paramedic.

"This handy and superbly presented pocket sized book is ideal for quick reference providing essential information on the immediate care setting. The authors are of unquestionable experience in the field of emergency medicine and...the book is both comprehensive and concise...[it] must surely
become an essential piece of kit for all pre-hospital care practitioners, replacing the bulky American books which have dominated the market."

--Accident and Emergency Nursing

"A useful reference for those involved in prehospital care of patients...this book addresses many areas of prehospital care and is thorough in what it covers."

--Krista G. Handyside, MD, University of Texas Medical School at Houston

"Having recently purchased the new Oxford Handbook of Accident and Emergency Medicine, I would like to say that it is an excellent update. As a Specialist Registrar . . . I am involved in training all new AandE doctors and will recommend this book highly."

--Dr Reshad Khodabocus, St James's Hospital, Leeds, July 2005

"The 1st edition (published 1999) has become the "Bible" of Emergency care for many practitioners working in this field - Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics etc... I used it throughout my Specialist Registrar training as both an "on the spot" diagnostic tool but also as a reference aid for my FRCS
and FFAEM. There's a lot more in it than you think! The second edition has built on and consolidated all that was good in the 1st edition but added some new sections and expanded others. It includes up to date information and references... I would not only recommend but also INSIST that all
practitioners... in emergency care read and used this handbook. It would also be useful to Doctors in almost all specialties including General Practice, General Surgery and General Medicine."

--Medical Defence Union

"...an essential book of reference...[and] an indispensable tool and survival guide to anyone working within emergency medicine...[it should be] accessible and in easy reach of all staff working within the emergency department."

--Accident and Emergency Nursing Journal

"...this book is a must-have for anyone wanting to become the next doctor to ride in the shiny red HEMS helicopter on his/her way to an emergency...Stimulating reading for anyone interested in emergency medicine."

--MAD (Barts and the London Med Student Journal)

Managing Construction Logistics, by Gary Sullivan, Stephen Barthorpe, Stephen Robbins

Every major industry except construction uses logistics to improve its bottom line…

Poor logistics is costing the construction industry at least 3 billion a year according to a report – ‘Improving Construction Logistics’ – published by the Strategic Forum for Construction. Additional costs arise as a result of operatives waiting for materials, and skilled craftsmen being used for unskilled jobs. Inadequate management of logistics also has an adverse effect on quality, causes delays to projects, and adds to the health and safety risks on site.

This practical book highlights the benefits of good logistics as well as the use of consolidation centres on projects. It shows how reduction in transport movements, less money tied up in stock, less waste, and the more efficient use of skilled craftsmen will reduce the cost of projects, reduce construction time, improve quality, reduce risks to health and safety, improve environmental performance and generally improve the image of the industry.

The authors offer practical ways of achieving these benefits through integrated project teams and supply chains and the increased adoption of information technology including electronic communications, bar coding, and electronic tagging for tracing products. They also show how specific roles for each part of the industry can help to improve logistics.

Review
"I can commend this book to both industry professionals, to academics and to students in the field of construction management. I would recommend that potential readers not follow my example but rather follow the advice of the King in Alice in Wonderland and begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Australasian Journal of Construction Economics and Building, 1 April 2010)

"Practical, clear and accessible. First book to address logistics in construction. Written by the industry-recognized logistics experts. Tackles issues of key concern: efficient use of labor; sustainability; waste and supply chain management." (Medicaster, 29 October 2010)

"This guide emphasises the benefits of good logistics in construction and includes many detailed case studies. "I believe constructors ignore this book at their peril," says Peter Rogers CBE, chairman of the Green Building Council." (Construction Manager, September 2010)

From the Back Cover
"I believe that constructors ignore this book at their peril. These techniques will soon be core to every construction business. The only question for industry decision-makers is to decide whether they want to get ahead of the curve by changing now, or wait until a streamlined and competitive industry forces them to adapt just to remain viable. As a client, I know what I’d recommend."
—Peter Rogers, CBE, Chairman of the Green Building Council

Inadequate management of logistics also has an adverse effect on quality, causes delays to projects, and adds to the health and safety risks on site.

This practical, clear and accessible book highlights the benefits of good logistics in construction as well explaining the use of consolidation centres for projects. It shows how reduction in transport movements, less money tied up in stock, less waste, and the more efficient use of skilled craftsmen will reduce the cost of projects, reduce construction time, improve quality, reduce risks to health and safety, improve environmental performance and generally improve the image of the industry.

The authors - industry-recognized logistics experts - offer tried-and-tested ways of achieving these benefits through integrated project teams and supply chains, and the increased adoption of information technology.

Managing Construction Logistics includes a wide range of lively and detailed case studies – from Terminal 5 to the Tate Gallery – showing how good logistics tackles the ‘hot potato’ issues within the construction industry: efficient use of labour; sustainability; waste and supply chain management.

Books like this likely don't get reviewed which is too bad. I thought it was well written and extremely helpful to my work. Getting people to understand and buy into construction logistics is very difficult. This book helped to explain some of the concepts around the advantageous consolidated logistics.
