Everyone Brave is Forgiven, by Chris Cleave

The instant New York Times bestseller from Chris Cleave—the unforgettable novel about three lives entangled during World War II, told “with dazzling prose, sharp English wit, and compassion…a powerful portrait of war’s effects on those who fight and those left behind” (People, Book of the Week).

London, 1939. The day war is declared, Mary North leaves finishing school unfinished, goes straight to the War Office, and signs up. Tom Shaw decides to ignore the war—until he learns his roommate Alistair Heath has unexpectedly enlisted. Then the conflict can no longer be avoided. Young, bright, and brave, Mary is certain she’d be a marvelous spy. When she is—bewilderingly—made a teacher, she finds herself defying prejudice to protect the children her country would rather forget. Tom, meanwhile, finds that he will do anything for Mary.

And when Mary and Alistair meet, it is love, as well as war, that will test them in ways they could not have imagined, entangling three lives in violence and passion, friendship and deception, inexorably shaping their hopes and dreams.

Set in London during the years of 1939–1942, when citizens had slim hope of survival, much less victory; and on the strategic island of Malta, which was daily devastated by the Axis barrage, Everyone Brave is Forgiven features little-known history and a perfect wartime love story inspired by the real-life love letters between Chris Cleave’s grandparents. This dazzling novel dares us to understand that, against the great theater of world events, it is the intimate losses, the small battles, the daily human triumphs that change us most.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of May 2016: We’ve been wondering lately: What is the secret sauce that makes novels like Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See and Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale so popular, stories set against the backdrop of WWII? Whatever it is, it made me approach Chris Cleave’s Everyone Brave is Forgiven with a particularly wary eye. Sure, it’s got all of the ingredients—heroes and heroines who are flawed yet admirable. Check! A love story that manages to be poignant without being precious. Check! It even has cover art that is, as an astute colleague put it, a little cartoonish but appealingly “Disney-London.” If you’re a terrible cook like me, however, you know that you can have all of the right ingredients and still concoct something utterly inedible. But this couldn’t be farther from the case with ‘Brave,’ which was inspired by love letters that Cleave unearthed from his grandparents. The non-love story aspects of this novel are just as compelling, and add a layer of gravitas to a story that could easily slip into “sudsy” territory. These parts provide a chilling reminder that it wasn’t just the Jews who were marginalized and punished during WWII, but black children, poor children, and the otherwise “different” or disenfranchised. Moreover, through the character of Mary North, ‘Brave’ emphasizes the importance of challenging injustices. This timeless message is another key ingredient in what is sure to be another beloved (WWII) novel. --Erin Kodicek

An Exceptionallly Well Told Story Set in London During WWII
By blueotter
“But what good is it to teach a child to count, if you don't show him that he counts for something?”

* * *
“Mary leaned back, exhaled, and watched her smoke rise. 'What sort of man do you want anyway?'
"Tall. Funny. Never came top of his class or pulled the wings off bees."
"Yes, but I mean really? When all of this is over, and assuming we win -" ...
Hilda snorted. "(I) just want a tall man and a stiff drink. You could even swap the adjectives.”

This WWII novel is set in London and battle areas, principally Malta (where a grandfather of author Cleave fought). Its five principal characters are Mary, an attractive, broad-minded 18 year old from a wealthy family who volunteers immediately upon war being declared, her close but less prepossessing friend Hilda, who helps Mary but gets annoyed that men always gravitate toward her, teaching administrator Tom who finds a class for Mary to teach, Tom's friend Alistair, an art restorer at the Tate who joins the war as an officer, and Zachary, a young black student of Mary's whom she helps amid the era's racism.

It's an exceptionally well-told story that, among other things, depicts the bombing's effects on the city and its populace vividly and better than any other book I've read on the subject. All the characters go through harrowing experiences of one kind or another. I found the use of the n-word and the racism difficult, but Cleave is making a legitimate point about the state of affairs at the time, and Mary will have none of it, thank goodness. I couldn't stop turning the pages, and the dialogue in particular is top of the line - smart, often surprising, and at times laugh-out-loud witty.

"Life took longer to reassemble than it did to blow apart, but that didn't mean it wouldn't be lovely."
By Ladybug
It's 1939, and Mary is 18-years old as the Germans start making their way toward England. Her family is financially well-off and politically powerful, and Mary is expected to toe the family line: marry a respectable man of her class and color, and then support his career over biscuits and tea. But Mary is wary of turning out like her dissatisfied mother and is desperate for the real action. Against her family's wishes, she volunteers her services moments after war is declared. And because she really hasn't ever been touched by hardship, she is convinced wholeheartedly that everything--from Hitler's advances to Daddy's disapproval--will, of course, eventually right itself in the end.

And life toddles along nicely for her at first. She gets a job and likes the job. She even gets a man and likes the man. But things start going badly soon after. To put it succinctly, Everyone Brave Is Forgiven, at its core, is a love story, but oh dear Lord, there will be a lot of suffering for that happy ending. Prepare yourself.

Ironically, while I ended up enjoying this book, it took me a long 50 pages to really get into it. Initially, I found myself putting the book down about every four pages because it irritated me so very much. Mary's exhausting (borderline unrealistic) optimism coupled with author Cleave's "Look what I can do!" verbosity was just too much. There's a fine line between being descriptive and being a wordsmith show-off. Cleave can paint a pretty word picture, but sometimes it distracts from the real story. There were moments when I really wanted Cleave to descend from his Word Throne and just talk to me like a commoner already. Ugh.

But after that 50-page mark, something changed for me. It might have been that I grew accustomed to Cleave's writing style, or maybe it was that Mary and Alistair finally meet and experience the CONNECTION they aren't supposed to, but, suddenly things start getting good. The story picks up and digs in. The characters come to life. They're funny! And the back-and-forth between them is witty and truly entertaining. I found myself relating to these people finally, empathizing with and understanding them. I genuinely started to care. And the rest of the book is so darn good.

The beginning of the story may have been a chore to get through, but, wow, I ended up LOVING this story. The complexity, the depth, the sadness, and--dare I say?--even the writing, all combined to create a beautiful novel. I'm so glad I pushed past those first few pages, because Everyone Brave Is Forgiven is an absolute gem.

An Extraordinary Story of Love and War
By Word Lover
When I got the chance to read an advanced reader’s edition of Everyone Brave is Forgiven for the Vine program, I jumped, simply because the book’s description of a World War II story sounded…intriguing. This novel, however, is so much more. Chris Cleave writes exquisitely, on par with say, Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See, another novel about the same war. Doerr’s book has won numerous awards, as I hope Cleave’s novel will, as well. Every paragraph offers sentences so well wrought you want to read them twice, with dialogue that is witty and sharp, and descriptions that bring the hell of war to life.

Everyone Brave is Forgiven manages to be an epic tale while looking at the war through the lens of two characters: Alistair Heath, a British soldier who fights in France and later, Malta, and Mary North, a young British woman of privilege who volunteers for war service. Mary, with no experience, is assigned to be a teacher, where she bonds with the son of an American minstrel show performer--while white children in London are evacuated to the countryside, this child is left behind. Later, along with her flighty friend Hilda, Mary drives an ambulance. As the war escalates and the death and destruction from the Blitz mount, Mary’s character matures. Twice, she falls in love.

Despite its subject matter, this book manages to be funny as well as deeply emotional. I recommend it highly.

It was the yellow ragwort that did it! I have discovered the clue at last. All night long I have been dreaming of Runswick Bay. I have been climbing the rocks, talking to the fishermen, picking my way over the masses of slippery seaweed, and breathing the fresh briny air. And all the morning I have been saying to myself, 'What can have made me dream of Runswick Bay? What can have brought the events of my short stay in that quaint little place so vividly before me?

A lighthouse story: secure on the Rock; that Rock is Christ
By Chatelaine
Alick Fergusson lived with his grandfather on a small island off the coast of Scotland. His grandfather was the keeper of the lighthouse, and Jem Millar, his assistant, and his family were the Fergusson's only neighbors. They lived their life on the island, tending their gardens, keeping the light going, and rescuing shipwrecked people whenever they could. Only once a month were they allowed to leave the island to go shop and take care of affairs in the village, and Jem and Sandy Fergusson took turns. They did have a "general store" boat that came out once a week to sell provisions.

In a powerful storm one night, the men from the island were trying to rescue passengers who were shipwrecked on Ainslie Crag. They were unable to get close, and the violence of the waves finally destroyed the boat right in front of them, but not before a little girl had been thrown to them through the storm. They looked for survivors, but there were none to be found. They assumed that the little girl's family had drowned with the others there, and the Fergussons made her a part of their family. She soon won their hearts, and they hated to think of parting with her. When they again went to the mainland, they notified the officials there that only one survivor had been rescued from the wreck, and gave the name found on the hem of her dress.

Later two men came to the island, whom Alick and his grandfather feared had found relatives of the girl, and were going to take her away. However, one was the owner of the ship, and had come to meet them and the little girl. He asked them if they were founded on the Rock. Sandy assured him that if they were not, the lighthouse and other buildings would never last the first storm that blew over; they were not buildings were not on the sand seen by the shore, but on the solid rock of the island. When the man left, he sent back a piece of paper with the words, "On Christ the solid Rock I stand: all other ground is sinking sand."

Puzzled, they talked it over with Jem Millar, and he said he thought he understood. He was heading to the mainland soon, but before he left, he told Alick that he knew he was on the Rock. It was well for him, because he never returned, having missed his step on the dock in the fog.

In the course of the rest of the book, a new man with links to the Fergussons' past comes to take Jem's place. Sandy is asked, "If your house was built on the sand down by the shore, what would you do?" He responded that he would tear it down, piece by piece, and rebuild it on the rock. He came to see that the good works he was counting on to get him into heaven were a sandy foundation, and he chose to rebuild his life on Christ. Alick also believed in Him.

After a while, it was discovered that the little girl's parents were not with her on the ship, after all. They came to claim her, and although the Fergussons hated to part with her, they were happy to see her with her parents again. Alick, after all, did not have to part with her. Grateful for the islanders' kindness, the girl's parents took him with them, and sent him to school. He left the island, knowing on Whom to build his life.

A sweet, touching story.

"Conclave: A Journal of Character" is a book to read.
By LG
Conclave: A Journal of Character - Review *****
It is not often that literary art takes a reader deep into the psyche of characters. In "Conclave: A Journal of Character," the reader may not travel far and wide in physical space but is pulled into the vast inner universe of characters portrayed in interviews, fiction, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, poems, essays, and images.

Whether the character overcomes stuttering, is a woman's lifetime struggle with her mother's relationship, is a slightly retarded teen, or a married couple's infidelity, the reader senses and perceives the world through the character's stream-of-consciousness.

For the lover of literary depth, fiction or nonfiction, "Conclave: A Journal of Character" is a book to read.

Review

"This is an excellent introduction to classical human embryology from a mechanistic and molecular viewpoint. It fills an important niche at a time when medical educators are faced with a conundrum. The genetic basis of disease and development are becoming more stressed in medicine at the same time that there is decreased coverage of classical embryology in the undergraduate medical curriculum, where it has been subjugated to a few lectures in most anatomy courses. The speed of change in the growing field of molecular and developmental biology warrants this revised and updated version. Overall, it improves upon the third edition it replaces, with improved artwork and the new approach to the development of the head that dental students will find very useful." - Mark Jaffe, DPM, MHSA (Nova Southeastern University), from Doody’s Reviews

"This is an excellent content bridge between anatomy and clinical practice: the vignettes are great and the images from the book are available online and downloadable as slides. It could become a best seller as its content and presentation are excellent, and the web-based support is very good." BMA Book Awards 2009 - judges comments

It is a good basic book in developmental biology.
By A Customer
Carlson's "Human embriology and developmental biology" is a good book for biology and, most of all, medicine students, who want to understand the basical principles of development. It doesn't have a lot of developmental anatomy, but it explains clearly and simply the ultimate advances in experimental embriology. If you are for the first time studying developmental biology, you should read it. It also contains at the end of each chapter a lot references, which will help you if you want to learn more about any specific topic.

The best embryology book
By A. Estrada
I use the book to my embryology class and I have to say that is the best book of embryology I find. The contents are very up-date, and handle much information of the molecular basis of the development and the genes that are expressed in every step of the human development. The book have a very good redaction and the gene information of the book is the best one. It's a very up-dated book.

Christmas Holiday, by W. Somerset Maugham

For Christmas, Charley Mason's father granted him a trip to Paris, all expenses paid. It should have been a lark, but on his first night Charley meets a woman whose story will forever change his life.

For Lydia has seen tragedy. The Russian Revolution displaced her family, left her homeless, fatherless. And for reasons that elude Charley, Lydia pines for a man half a world away--a dope dealer and murderer whose sins Lydia seeks to absolve through her own self- destruction. Haunting, erotic, deeply effecting, Christmas Holiday explores two souls capsized by compassion--and the confusion that engulfed a generation in the days between the Great Wars.

From Library Journal
Delany isn't the only author Vintage is keeping afloat. Published in 1939, 1937, and 1940, respectively, these novels follow Maugham's popular theme whereby people whose seemingly steady lives become completely and utterly altered. Note also that Up at the Villa was made into a feature film in 2000, which may draw additional readers. Maugham is always a quick and pleasant read.

By Joe Regan Jr.
A rare Maugham story specifically interesting because of the movie made from it which avoids the kinkier parts but they are there in subtle ways in the actors' performances, especially Deanna Durbin's. Gene Kelly plays the husband and Gale Sondergaard is the mother in law and the locale is San Francisco as well as Paris.

You can never go home again
By fleur de lys
"Christmas Holiday" takes place in a period of interlude between the two world wars in England and France when the worst in world affairs was not over but yet to come. For Charley Mason, the young Englishman the gift of 5 days in Paris his parents have given him turns out to be less the anticipated celebration and more of an unsettling interlude in his own life. It develops for him into a revelatory journey that blemishes his happy heart and privileged home life. He reunites in Paris with a troubled boyhood friend Simon now a news reporter who he hasn't seen for two years. Charley is bewildered and tries to gain perspective on Simon's seeming metamorphosis into a self-confessed misanthropist and insensitive manipulator. It is Simon who lays out all the sores of humanity for Charley's tender sensibilities to collide with. At the Srail, a cabaret where bare breasted dancing girls glitter in harem pants and turbans and can be taken upstairs for a price, Simon pairs Charley with "Princess Olga" the working name of an enigmatic Russian girl named Lydia. Charley is ensnared by Lydia's anguished life story, her orphaned state, her poverty and unreasonable devotion to a convict husband whose imprisonment and guilt she feels she must share through her own continued suffering. For a brief time the reality of Charley 's respectable, comfortable and secure existence becomes entwined with those whom fate has not so similarly blessed. His"Holiday" changes him forever.

Here again Maugham's gift for telling a story is evident. He uses words with a facility that brings a narrative to life in a way that engages the imagination and enables the reader to vividly picture the characters and events. A recommended read.

A product of the English Gentleman schools goes to Paris
By jimcmaui@buddhist.com Jim Campbell
Christmas Holiday is probably Somerset Maugham's forth most important novel after "Of Human Bondage","The Moon and Sixpense" and "The Razors Edge." At the time of its publication, "Cakes and Ale" was considered to be his most well written book, but it has not withstood the test of time. It is also about writers, and writers writing about writers is lazy self-centered writing. Holiday in the European language is also a vacation, and this is a story of a young man on a five day trip to Paris. Instead of exclusively Maxim's, The Moulon Rouge, and sight seeing he falls inside the seamy side of life. The story takes us from Paris to French Guinea and Devil's Island prison colony. The young man returns to London a changed man, but not the way his parents intended. On another level Maugham was making a statement on the self complacency of the British and their reluctance to fight Fascism {i.e. Jack London's "The Iron Heal"} in 1937, about the time Maugham started the book. The book was recieved with bad reviews from Graham Greene and glowing reviews from many others, including Glenway Wescott who included it in a Somerset Maugham anthology he put together in book form. This is not to be confused with great literature but it is a good story and very readable, like all of Maugham. It is also for anyone interested in Paris before the War. I have recommended it to three of my well-read friends and they all thanked me for it.

For Designers
By Kyle L Hildebrant
This is a great book. I've had a chance to see a preview copy, and I would suggest picking it up.

The cover shown here is a bit deceptive, check out the other photos to see an actual photo of the cover (I believe this was submitted before the cover was finalized).

The premise is showing re-designs of logos. Normally a 1-to-1 comparison. It's a helpful resource for designers. It's interesting the see the evolution of a trademark, and how time and style affects it. There's a lot of great case studies and examples in this book. A nice addition to any designers bookshelf.
