Outstanding even if outdated.

Although this book is about 20 years old and to my knowledge has not been released in an updated edition it is an excellent reference and still quite valid. I have Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism by Groff and Nutritional Biochemistry, by Brody, but I still prefer to refer to this book. So if you don't want to spend and exhorbitant amount of money and don't need the latest research which to some extent you can do yourself on the web, then look no further. You can pick this book up for less than $10.

The most influential book of my entire life

Nutritional Biochemistry, edited by Dr. M. Linder is an influential textbook. Some time ago, this book was provided to me for teaching a class of upper division students and graduate students in the field of nutrition. All of the students purchased this book. However, during the first week of teaching, it was apparent to me that the book was failing as a teaching device. The writing is clumsy. For example, concepts in metabolism are set forth by complicated diagrams with many arrows. These diagrams almost resemble topographical maps of mountain ranges. The Linder book is not alone in having this fault of attempting to "teach" a biochemical pathway by way of a complex diagram taking the form of multi-branched flow chart with ten to twenty arrows. Thus, my critique regarding this textbook "teaching" device is a general one.

Also, I noticed that many of the "facts" about chemistry, enzymology, metabolic pathways, regulation, and so on, were not correct. To reiterate this point, it is the case that the Linder book is filled with errors. And so, by the end of the week, I told my students that they could return the Linder book to the campus bookstore.

As a consequence, for each of the subsequent lectures for my course, I was forced to scramble for twelve solid hours to prepare each 1-hour lecture, and to draft accompanying handouts for my class. At the end of the semester, I had 400 pages of handouts. I submitted these to several publishers and my efforts were rewarded with contracts from three different publishing companies. I chose the best one (Academic Press). To make a long story short, a first edition and also a second edition of my nutrition book was published. And so, it can be seen that the Linder book turned out to be the most influential book in my life.

About the Author
Dr. Janell Carroll received her Ph.D. in human sexuality education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. She teaches in the psychology department at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, is an AASECT-certified sexuality educator, and has received numerous awards for her teaching and work in the field of human sexuality. In 2005, the University of Hartford recognized her with the Gordon Clark Ramsey Award for Creative Excellence, given to professors who demonstrate sustained excellence and creativity in the classroom. Carroll has also been recognized by Planned Parenthood as a Sexuality Educator of the Year. Prior to teaching at University of Hartford, Dr. Carroll was a tenured psychology professor at Baker University, where she was honored with awards for Professor of the Year and Most Outstanding Person on Campus. A dynamic educator, speaker, and author, Dr. Carroll has also hosted two of her own radio talk shows about on sexuality and appeared as an expert on numerous television talk shows and networks. Great book for psychology of human sexuality.

This book is incredibly interesting! Using the MindTap access that goes with this book is actually really helpful for understanding the material further with an interactive experience. The book is very well written, easy to understand and brings up a lot of interesting topics and perspectives. I have the kindle edition, and I enjoy it very much.

Antenna Compendium Vol 8- My Opinions

ARRL tries hard to publish good and useful books and generally they do well. One must expect that in a compendium of antenna articles (many published in previous issues of QST) there are going to be some entries that don't appeal to any one reader. That's what I've found with this and the 5th edition. (I own only these two). One of my interests for the last 48 years of Ham Radio is HF antennas for local and DX communications that don't cost thousands of bucks and/or require 10 acres of land. In the present edition of the Compendium, there were 5 articles that I liked and learned from, or just enjoyed reading. All the others are along for the ride at no extra charge. Recommendation: If you really want good, solid info about antennas and transmission lines that you can put to use for a variety of applications and needs, data that you will return to over and over, you will be much happier if you buy both the "The ARRL Antenna Book" (21st edition was good and maybe the 22nd will be even better) AND "ON4UN's Low Band DXing Handbook."

One of the BEST self-help books in years, I think

I came to Amazon to order a few extra copies for friends and would-be-better friends and was surprised to see (so far) only one review for this book. I, too, snapped it up cheap, not at all sure of the quality or VALUE, but I think that Bucay's book is well worth full retail.

Bucay is Argentinian, and this is his first book translated into English for a North American publisher and audience. But the good doctor is renowed in Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

Yes, he gets off to a bit of a disjointed start, with a patched together string of parables that seem sort of quaint and "foreign" (even causing me to conjure that first and greatest of Spanish "QUEST" characters, Don Quixote, but this little book really gets into some fine insights useful in the here and NOW. This is - Bucay is - a WISE GUY, and I say that in the positive sense. His folksy manner may, for some, betray the real rewards and subtle weight of his work, but that, I think, becomes MORE charming as the books progresses. MORE, not less, so give it a few chapters to warm up - and for you to warm to Bucay's rhetorical style. Then, the rest of this efficient and alluring book will be WELL worthwhile.

Bucay helps us consider what our freedoms are, what our responsibilities are (and aren't), and HOW we can come to terms (in simple though not terms) with reconciling our lives with the familial, social and cultural trappings, baggage and conventional "be like us/be a winner") BS around us. Any time an author can say accessible things about that, with some old-fashioned parables, straightforward language and some real insight and wisdom WITHOUT JARGON is just about ALWAYS worth the cover price.

Bucay shows much more humility and grace than most Type-A slash North American self-help writers. His book is a breath of modern sense with some Old World flair.

I encourage you to consider this book. I hope you'll get it and give Bucay's very FRIENDLY voice a chance to sink in. Then, as you read it, the real "meaning of life" insights will be what you find yourself considering.

Excellent Self-help book

This is an excellent book dealing with a topic most people struggle with at some level. The author does a great job of walking us through the problem of dependency and how we can become more self-dependent. He is very humble and talks about his own life with many examples. In addition I liked the fact that the author acknowledges that we can never really be self-dependent entirely. We can however, recognize issues and work towards being more self-dependent.

Edward Finegan (MA and PhD, Ohio University) specializes in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, forensic linguistics, and the history and structure of the English language. He served as chair of the Department of Linguistics at USC and currently serves as director of USC's Center for Excellence in Teaching. President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists, Finegan is editor of DICTIONARIES: THE JOURNAL OF THE DICTIONARY SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA and has been Liberal Arts Fellow in Law and Linguistics, Harvard University; Visiting Professor at University of Zurich; and Visiting Scholar at University of Helsinki. A Great Introduction to Linguistics

I'm not sure I would get as much out of this book if I weren't taking a class at the same time. That being said, this is one of my favorite classes and the textbook is chocked full of information. This isn't a grammar book, though, it's linguistics, so if you're looking for a grammar reference or similar then I suggest you look for a different book. If you're interested in the study of languages from dialect to morphology to history, this is a great textbook and a great starting point.

Wisdom for Couples

I've been married for more than five decades--yes, we've celebrated our golden wedding anniversary--so I thought that this book wouldn't have much to offer me. Boy, was I wrong! I appreciate the way the author clarifies points that I would have missed on my own study of Solomon. For instance, on page 39, he explains the use of the word, "filly" used by Solomon in 1:9. It's a compliment when Solomon calls his love a horse! Again, looking at The Song of Solomon, chapter 4, Solomon praises his love's eyes, hair, teeth, lips, mouth, temples, neck, and breasts (152-157) in words unique to our times. Expanded explanations like these help me understand.

More than a Bible study, more than a look at love relationships, more than a guide for a successful marriage, this book is one I would recommend to engaged couples, newlyweds, and to all married no matter the number of years. In addition, troubled marriages and even those tetering on the brink of divorce will find wisdom in this book.

Kinda Dull

I purchased this book to use as a guideline to teach a couples class in my church. I was hoping this book would take us through the book of Song of Solomon with some helpful insights to intimacy between husband and wife. While I consider David Jeremiah to be a reliable author who faithfully teaches the truth, I found this book to be rather dull. He definitely takes a "conservative" approach when it comes to discussing sexuality. I wish he were a bit more blunt.

The book is very wordy and does not have the smoothest of flow. I have used it for four weeks and have decided to go in another direction for what I am looking for. If I knew of a better option I would state it here but hope to find one soon and update this review at a later time.

Not many Christians talk about sex, which is disheartening, because God created it. I don't understand how people in church expect others to live by God's standards when they make God's standards seem unattractive. Not David Jeremiah, though. He eloquently explores what God intended for love, marriage and sex, using the Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs) as the anchor. David Jeremiah is tasteful but spares no shortcuts with the sexually charged book of the bible, which is inspired by the Holy Spirit, after all. This is truly a beautiful book on a beautiful subject.

This is the best sales process book ever written. I have used this book as my sales training "bible". I read at least one section of this book every third month for the last 12 years. If you know you are going to get a sales job, this book will help spark some thinking, and give you suggestions on form, questions to ask, and how to organize your relationships with your account. It is the basics, and an easy read. Lots of variety with an index to find things fast.

Great Sales Techniques for the 21st Century

If you're tired of reading reheated sales techniques from the 80s, this book is for you. I own a travel agency and I'm trying to motivate our sales staff. With a luxury product, we can't use cheesy and outdated "Which day is better, Tuesday or Thursday?" sales techniques. Bill Brooks infuses integrity and honor back into the Sales Professional and describes a way of doing business that sales people can both be proud of and create a good living. Bravo!
