A quirky serial peopled with potential book friends that I will revisit often

I had heard a lot about this MM serial, a collaboration between two authors, one known to me the other a newbie to the indie publishing industry. The comments had me intrigued. It was obvious people were waiting with bated-breath between each of the six instalments coming out. So when the first episode was offered for free I snapped it up and put it onto my TBR list.
I must say, if it hadn’t been for poor old Will’s crazy-as mafia-related family this little gem of a tale would have ended as soon as Will and Patrick woke up. Thank goodness it didn’t. I devoured the first book and then went and purchased the entire series.
Will was a man with many emotional issues, a penchant for drink (well, an all-out alcoholic actually) and driven to the booze by the obnoxious actions and abuse of the only man he had loved to that point in his life. Dumped by Ryan while he was in Vegas - over the phone no less - Will rebounded literally into the arms of the predatory Patrick and woke up the next morning with a massive hangover and to find he had married what appeared to be an insufferable man. Now don’t get me wrong, Patrick is the one I actually fell in love with.
Decidedly arrogant - he was after all the preeminent brain surgeon in the world - Patrick was forthright and bald with the truth, condescending to those who worked under him, gaining enemies left right and centre, but in fact was just a man lacking in certain social skills. Underneath it all he was just a big softy, and really rather enamoured of the gentle and soul-tortured Will. He, on the whole, provided all the laughs as he navigated the quirky town of Healing their ill-fated situation had landed him in.
Will’s family were definitely a trial, as they and his friends castigated, manipulated, cajoled, threatened with guns (well his dad was a gangster, after all) him into the box they had fashioned for him – to keep him safe, mind, because he obviously couldn’t do that on his own despite that he was a man running a multi-million dollar charitable organisation. They knew best and, of course, in their not so humble opinion it wasn’t the arrogant Patrick. More fool them. It was a joy to follow Will and Patrick as they proved them wrong, navigating through their life issues, of which they both had many, and drawing closer together along the way.
In the end I had but one quibble, and that being it was of necessity, a little drawn out towards the end - I mourned Owen’s unwanted and unnecessary advice to Will, knowing it came from a place of selfishness and jealousy. If only Will had talked to Jax first to find out exactly what was ‘normal’ – But it was put out as a serial with all the drama and anticipation of having to wait for each new instalment to come out – the wait makes every word of each episode that much more easily devoured; and I didn’t, I read it in one sitting (well maybe three – there were six books, after all, to the series and I’m not the fastest reader in the world).
It was however, time well spent, and I know it will call to me again because I do like revisiting old friends and this strange and weird bunch definitely wormed their way into that category.

This was such an engaging series...Will and Patrick are one of my favorite couples...the series ended perfectly...I want more tho from this world....what happened with Harley and Ryan..I want Kevin to get a second chance at love as well...I hope these authors continue with stories from Healing South Dakota!!!!

Hilarious, poignant, heartbreaking, unputdownable - an exquisite surprise and a must-read

What an amazing, unexpected, delightful surprise this serial was! Truly, one of the best reads of the year and a must-read for any M/M fan. Let me tell you why.
First of all, the cover art, while fun and attention-grabbing, doesn't quite do this serial justice. Yes, the initial premise may sound far fetched: two strangers get drunk, get married and have amazing sex in Vegas; one of them is a world renowned neurosurgeon; the other is a trust fund millionaire philanthropist related to a big time mobster crime family, and his inheritance hinges on him never getting a divorce. You'd think that this book would be one hilarious, madcap adventure, and it is partly that. It's clever, witty, smart, funny, and initially, requires a huge suspension of disbelief. But behind this exterior lies a story of surprising depth, emotional intelligence, and undeniable beauty.
I think that the authors used two somewhat unconventional devices to a huge benefit here. First, the idea to turn this book into a serial is brilliant. As a reader, you get to follow the journey of the main characters in a way that feels true and genuine. And the choice to draw the narrative using the third person present tense, while at first a bit surprising, works extremely well. Somehow the authors manage to pull the reader in completely while also creating a sense of observation. as well as immediacy and urgency. Well done.
The characters here are wonderful - some of my favorites of all time, I have to say, and I read a lot of m/m fiction. In the first installment, comedy reigns supreme, with both men reeling from their crazy drunken night of sex and ill-advised nuptials. Patrick is, at first look, arrogant, abrasive, absolutely hilarious and completely uninhibited. Will is younger, a lot less experienced, kind, and reeling from the recent break-up with his boyfriend of 5 years. But just like the cover art and the blurb, the bright picture you see at first glance hides an unexpected depth. There is a lot more to both men than we first realized. As we progress through the narrative, we learn about Will's breakup, his many toxic relationships with his family, and his struggle with alcoholism. The wise-cracking, independent Patrick also has a painful past. Before long, both the story and the characters are revealed to be much, much more.
This serial covers a number of important themes with an amazing degree of emotional clarity and compassion. Abuse. toxic relationships, alcoholism, bigotry, low self-esteem and sexual shame are all explored, often with unexpected poignancy and depth. What I found especially gratifying was the very obvious growth of both main characters. The major theme of this serial is how love is often found in the most unexpected places, and how we are often betrayed and let down by our family who are supposed to give us that love unconditionally. Both MCs have suffered great wounds from their respective families, and ironically, it's through their own madcap, ill-advised union that they discover what it truly means to love and be loved in return. This is a wonderful example of a real relationship, in which the two men have a lot of differences but at the same time are able to offer each other the kind of support and perspective that had been denied to them by everyone else. Will and Patrick are fundamentally good for each other because they see each other as they truly are. Patrick sees Will as a strong, capable, generous man and not the perverted, drunken deviant his ex Ryan and even his family accuse him of being. Will sees through Patrick's abrasive exterior to the kind and loving man underneath. For me, there were two instances where these men sum up so clearly what this serial is all about:
Patrick, to Will: "Stop lying to yourself, Will. I cant' always be here to drink your shots for you."
Patrick's greatest strength is honesty. He is often blunt, but he is always true to who he is. He sees how beaten down Will has become as a result of constant emotional abuse from those who supposedly love him. Patrick, with his unflinching honestly, cuts through the emotional pain that drives Will to drink, and the self-delusion that Will has maintained for so long, and inspires him to finally face the realities of his life and to take charge.
Will, talking about what real love is supposed to be like: "Love makes you a better person. A stronger person." That's Will's lesson - realizing that those who truly love you will build you up instead of tearing you down. But it's also Patrick's lesson. At one point in the novel, Patrick wonders at length about the mystery of love, and whether it's just a simple chemical reaction - one that he wants nothing to do with. But Will is all heart, and through Will's openness and vulnerability, Patrick realizes that love, in all its messiness and unpredictability, is worth fighting and overcoming his own fears for.
I would also be remiss if I didn't mention how amazing the MC's chemistry is. Their initial coupling, revealed in flashbacks, is explosive, passionate, and unforgettable. Then, they are forced to go back to zero due to the strangeness of their situation and Will's sexual guilt, shame, and misplaced loyalty to his abusive ex. But as the serial progresses, the sexual pull between these two becomes impossible to resist. The sex scenes aren't just incredibly well written, passionate and hot; sex, here, is a tool for emotional healing. Sex is the one thing that is always good, always honest between them. Through sex with Patrick, Will heals his deep seated sexual shame and the years of emotional abuse at the hands of his ex and family. Through sex with Will, Patrick discovers the power of true vulnerability, and opens his heart to a deep, loving connection.
Honestly, I can't say enough great things about this serial. It's both absurd and poignant; hilarious and heart-breaking. It's also deeply emotionally resonant and very well written. I can't recommend it highly enough. As soon as it was over, I wanted to read it again; if there is a higher compliment to a book, I don't know what it is. Do yourself a huge favor - go and read it now!
