The Objectivist's Morality of Selfishness

"Ethics is an objective necessity of man's survival-not by the grace of the supernatural nor of your neighbors nor of your whims, but by the grace of reality and the nature of life." says Ayn Rand at the beginning of the book.
This book--The Virtue of Selfishness-A New Concept of Egoism--blows my mind when I read it. Ayn Rand, the author of this book, is so good at expressing her beliefs in moral and ethical issues. The idea expressed in this book is relatively alien to me because of Catholic school's social teaching. However, Ayn Rand's ideas are not alien to American society: Ayn Rand's ideas were mostly opposite to Jesus' teaching, yet her book was popular among Republicans, especially those proclaim to be Christian conservatives (Ayn Rand was an atheist and she was pro-choice.)
However, her writing in this book does speak the truth. Ayn Rand writes, "An organism's life is its standard by value: that which furthers its life is the good, that which threatens it is the evil." It is true because throughout this book she supports and advocates a rational, objective "selfishness" rather than a selfishness based on one's whim. For example: the November 2015 Paris attacks, which resulted in the death of 129 innocent people, was a human tragedy. Therefore, according to this book, the "selfish" thing to do is to stand up against the terrorists because they threaten the human life rather than indifference which is based on whim. I believe that is the true interpretation of Ayn Rand's philosophy that was addressed in the Virtue of Selfishness.
Overall, the book is extremely appealing and worth reading. I strongly recommend this book. In addition, I had to look up some words in this book because it involves philosophical jargons.

It's pretty clear from reading The Virtue of Selfishness that she ...

Ayn Rand is a heroine of many conservatives. Her life story is dramatic, starting in Russia. I first encountered her writing in the 50's at the University of Texas in Austin. At that time I had no real politic convictions and studied in Plan Two which was definitely not a conservative learning group of bright students. There about 300 of us in the freshman class of about 4,000 students, men and women. I moved to Dallas after graduation to do a masters program. My political thinking was influenced by the general intellectual environment in Dallas in the summer of 1963. I was in the downtown Dallas area at the moment of John Kennedy's assassination -- a tragic event that had a strong effect on my life and the lives of huge numbers of the world's population. In January, 1965 I boarded a military bus leaving basic air force training in San Antonio Texas and on the bus station book rack picked up this book. Over the next 7 hours on the road trip to Amarillo Air Force Base where I was going to start a study course in air force personnel. After having spent the prior 6 weeks in a totally regimented military experience, the intellectual experience of reading this book was heavy. I have discussed this book over the years. Many followers of Ayn Rand don't know that she was a non Christian atheist. It's pretty clear from reading The Virtue of Selfishness that she doesn't have much sympathy for the less fortunate in civilization. She is a pure capitalist. This book does a great job of explaining Ayn Rand's philosophy.

Life changer

A great start book to get to know Ayn Rand and her philosophy. This book will also teach you how to think critically, use logic and will make you reconsider many things that you once believed or did unquestioningly. In this book Ayn Rand destroys collectivism and shows through logical and very good arguments why selfishness is better and why although selfishness is categorized or deemed as something negative nowadays, it is actually absolutely fine and moral to be selfish. This woman is such a great writer. This book changed my life. I mean that!

A good quality introductory text and reference

The world of Virology is becoming more important by the day. The statistically overdue influenza pandemic makes rapid understanding of viruses an even more urgent topic. I have found this book to be of great benefit when explaining concepts ("What does H5N1 mean?") to those who need to get a scientific view of viruses but are not life scientists themselves, especially government leaders, corporate executives and the like. Unfortunately material just cannot be produced fast enough to keep pace with the evolution in scientific understanding that is taking place. I highly recommend this book; however for those new to virology it is not a "quick afternoon read". It does have very likeable features such as the chapter structure which begins with a synopsis called "At a glance" and a list of abbreviations and a standardised colour coding for molecular diagrams. The "Virologists Vocabulary"(pp335-347) is really a glossary and although not all-embracing (big ask) it is very useful. Glossaries and definition sections must become mandatory components of all texts I believe, especially given the expansion rate of jargon and abbreviation.
Overall, this is a good quality book that is easy to read and well endowed with illustrations. As an aside biomedical and scientific illustrations do need to improve dramatically in all texts. I am aware of the time/cost and effort issues of this statement however a good illustration is worth (to many) more than 1000 words and a poor illustration can be simply counter productive.

Rapid education in virology (which is absolutely essential) requires students and educators alike to have easy access to verified comparitive material. DVD's or other electronic complementary delivery techniques would have been of great assistance. SeePrinciples of Molecular Virology (Standard Edition), Fourth Edition as a useful, but not exclusive example.

I love this book

This is the most friendly text book I've seen. It's written in a very "reader-friendly" format. The organization of the material makes it easier to read and understand. It's not your typical dry reading, colorless book. For me, if I have to try to tackle such a difficult topic as Virology, I don't want a book that will put me to sleep. I find this book to be a much better option. I think you will too.

This is an OK book on virology.
My problem is that it reads funny, like they were trying to cram in as much information they could without having it read well.
I seriously hope that the second edition is better.

About the Author

Hartley Dean is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. Before his academic career he had been a welfare rights worker in one of London's most deprived multi-cultural neighbourhoods. His principal research interests stem from concerns with poverty and social justice. He is a past editor of the Journal of Social Policy and among his more recently published books are Social Policy (Polity, 2006 and 2012), Understanding Human Need (The Policy Press, 2010) and Social Rights and Human Welfare (Routledge, 2015).

Lucinda Platt is Professor of Social Policy and Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Before joining the LSE she worked at Essex University and at UCL Institute of Education, where she was Director of the Millennium Cohort Study. A quantitative sociologist, Lucinda's main research interests are in inequalities and social stratification, in particular child poverty, ethnicity, immigration and disability, and in longitudinal approaches to analysis of these issues. Her most recent book was Understanding Inequalities: Stratification and Difference (Polity, 2011), and she is co-author of Intergenerational Consequences of Migration (forthcoming Palgrave Macmillan).

The possible, Folkmann argues, is contained as a structure of meaning within the objects of design, which act as part of our interface with the world. Taking a largely phenomenological perspective that reflects both continental and American pragmatist approaches, Folkmann also makes use of discourses that range from practice-focused accounts of design methodology to cultural studies. Throughout, he offers concrete examples to illustrate theoretical points. Folkmann's philosophically informed account shows design -- in all its manifestations, from physical products to principles of organization -- to be an essential medium for the articulation and transformation of culture.

Excellent book on the theory of design with an excellent bibliography. Design is more than working and thinking with ones hands and the author proves this linking design theory to the imaginative and Cultural process that exists within the mind of the individual. This approach opens wide the previously narrow field of design. I would highly recommend this book.

No page numbers--unacceptable

This a well-written, thoughtful and somewhat a dense book about aesthetics in design. Nygaard takes a novel approach, paying close attention to issues such as possibility in design, and the book is well-researched and engaging. The problem is that, once again, this Kindle edition has no page numbers. That may be fine for a romance novel but this is a scholarly work and a research book. What good is having page numbers in an index when the reader has no way to get to those page numbers without guess work? Kindle needs to find a way to supply the original page numbers, especially in scholarly works. Otherwise, it's an exercise in frustration to purchase these books in this format.

Surprised me!

Troy, Elliot and Sophie are the three submariners who are in search of a black box from the disappeared plane in Indian Ocean. They pick up some sort of different signal four miles underwater. They pursue their journey next day again to see where that signal is from. What the trio find is completely unexpected and their life is on the line now.

Oliver Phipps has created a neat and superficial world of action and adventure. The writing and editing was good. The characters were engaging. There are major plot twists that will keep the readers on edge. The 'strangers'' world was made rich and well thought out to create enough suspense in the mind of the readers. This short sci-fi underwater adventure has definitely surprised me!

Fantastic, easy read!

In the wake of the missing flight N340, three submariners are sent on a search to locate the aircraft. What they find is incredible and frightening. This novel will transport you into a highly imaginative and action-packed world. I have not read many novels that incorporate mythology into the storyline, but I throughly enjoyed this one. I didn't need extensive knowledge to understand just what the three were up against, which is always nice.

If you have a free afternoon and want to read something both easy and thrilling, this should be the novel you purchase. It was a lot of fun and didn't lose my attention for a second. This author has a way of creating a world that you can visualize. The only reason I even give this a four star instead of five is due to the occasional grammar issues. That said, don't let this keep you away! They will not take away from the experience for a second. In fact, I look forward to reading some more of the books by this author. New fan here!

Intense, action packed underwater thriller!

The author creates an intense, action packed underwater sci-fi thriller that is fun and exciting at every turn. A plane has disappeared in the Indian Ocean and our three main characters Troy, Sophie, and Eliot are in a submersible in route to find what they think is the black box. What they find will change their lives forever. Oliver Phipps imagination and creativity are simply amazing. You feel you are right there in the trench with Troy and his crew to make sense of everything that is unfolding before them. The blending of mythical monsters in the stranger's world was simply genius. I look forward to more from this talented author.
