What's Your Green Goldfish?: Beyond Dollars: 15 Ways to Drive Employee Engagement and Reinforce Culture, by Stan Phelps

What’s Your Green Goldfish is based on the simple premise that employees are the key drivers of customer experience and that “Happy Employees Create Happy Customers.” The book focuses on 15 different ways to drive employee engagement and reinforce a strong corporate culture.

It's the second book in the goldfish trilogy. The first book was an Amazon Best Seller entitled, What’s Your Purple Goldfish. Purple focused on customers, whereby Green focuses on employees. Both books are based on a revolutionary new approach called marketing g.l.u.e. (marketing by giving little unexpected extras).

The book is based on the findings of the Green Goldfish Project, an effort which crowd sourced 1,001 examples of signature added value for employees. Key themes emerged from the Project. The book is filled with over 200 examples.

Every Leader Should Read This Book
By Jeannie C. Walters
Stan Phelps's new book, What's Your Green Goldfish: Beyond Dollars: 15 Ways To Drive Employee Engagement And Reinforce Culture, highlights the best ways to develop outstanding cultures for organizations. Stan cleverly crowdsourced the examples in this book, enlightening us on companies which are not the typical ones. In example after example, Stan inspires the reader to think of creative, sincere and unique ways to reward employees, create amazing cultures, and as a result deliver an exceptional and memorable customer experience. I literally FLEW through this - and know I will be returning to it all the time. How can you read about all these amazing and creative cultures without getting a whole slew of ideas for your own organization? (Hint: You can't.)

Creating a powerful culture is about helping your best employees feel so engaged they will remain loyal. Workers are expensive and difficult to replace. Keeping your best ones is in your company's best interest. WYGG is about understanding that money as a motivator is not the aim - it's the special things companies do to help their cultures thrive.

A few favorites from the examples:

Semco, a Brazilian manufacturer, has had some years where employee turnover has been as low as 1%, thanks to several innovative cultural ideas. They don't let employees sit in the same place for two days in a row. This encourages more collaboration and helps prevent managers from micromanaging.
Google's Conference Bike has four wheels and five riders, perfect for team-building.
ZocDoc forgoes fancy furniture to stay frugal, but caters lunch for workers. Part of the motivation is to help "ZocDoc-ers" from various departments get to know each other.
Morningstar offers sabbaticals of six weeks paid time off every four years. Employees also get "as much time as they want" for vacation.
This book does a great job of highlighting the small ways any organization can use relevant perks to create special cultures. Today's employees care about money, sure, but they care about so much more than money. As a motivator, flexible work schedules, access to the CEO or workplaces that are actually fun create more lasting loyalty.

In fact, 57% of employees reported the most meaningful recognition was free. This comes down to understanding what the expectations are for your employees and exceeding them by doing something special - just like your customers. A handwritten note from the CEO or manager can go a long way.

So go buy this book! It's one of those you can pull out when you are searching for ideas on how to create the best culture you can. The best advice you can take from all these great examples is to create an experience for your employees that is just as a special as the one for your customers.

A must-read for ideas on how to transform your organization's culture
By Annette Franz
I was excited to read What's Your Green Goldfish because I was really starting to think that there are just too few companies focusing on the employee experience. This book gave me hope. Trust me - there are many more companies out there that have their work cut out for them in this area, but these 1,001 examples of how companies take care of their employees are refreshing!

The Green Goldfish book is filled with a lot of great ideas and approaches to understanding employee engagement, but I like that Stan carries the 9 INCH theme through this book. He outlines the 9" between the head and the heart of the employee and gives examples for every inch along the journey. As I read about each of the nine inches, I couldn't help but think of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Check these out and see if you agree.

Stan calls the first three inches "The Basics," defined as creating a stable environment.

First Inch: Onboarding/Food and Beverage
Make a solid first impression with your employees. Get onboarding right and get your new hires started off on the right foot. Stan says that less than 25% of companies have a formal onboarding process.

Second Inch: Shelter and Wellness
Your workspace, your physical environment, where you work - these are all important to moving to the second inch of the journey. In addition, supporting healthy living and healthy behavior results in healthy, happy, productive employees.

Third Inch: Time Away and the Modern Family
Having time off is key, but in the States, we have the fewest number of days off work every year. Typically, full-time employees get two weeks, plus maybe 10 holidays throughout the year. Here's the problem: many of us don't even take what we get. As David Murphy of North Face said: "Vacation days are like aspirin; they only work if you take them."

The other component of the third inch is the needs of the modern family; this doesn't just refer to same-sex couples but also to spending time with family, caring for elderly parents or ill family members. Companies who support all of these scenarios are well ahead of the pack.

Stan refers to these next three inches as "Belonging," defined as enabling high-functioning teams and recognizing their efforts.

Fourth Inch: Retirement and Flexibility
Flexible work arrangements improve satisfaction and productivity. I can speak to that. I work from home, and I always say that I get more done in six hours at home than in 10 hours in the office. I love working from home.

As for retirement, both matching and contributing along with retirement planning services help to prepare employees for the "after life."

Fifth Inch: Team Building and Transparency
Being part of a team and feeling connected to those you work with, all working to achieve a common goal, is critical to employee engagement. Working in an open, transparent environment toward that goal is even better.

Sixth Inch: Attaboys and Attagirls
Without a doubt, recognition for your work gives you that sense of accomplishment and belonging. We feel like we've added value, while at the same time, it boosts our own sense of worth.

Stan calls the last three inches "Building," which he describes as empowering employees to learn, give back, and take control of their destinies.

Seventh Inch: Training and Development
Wouldn't you be excited about working for a company that helps you (or wants you to) grow as an individual and as an employee? That includes both in-house and external training, as well as tuition reimbursement. Both companies and employees benefit from this leg of the journey, where companies truly invest in their employees.

Eighth Inch: Giving Back and Paying It Forward
Making it easy for employees to give back, pay it forward, and offer up their time to serve those in need certainly shows that the company cares about humanity, in general.

Ninth Inch: Empowering Dreams and Goals
Stan describes this final inch of the journey as enabling employees to do their best. Help them find their way, support them with training and resources, and then step aside so they can do what they need to do.

Grab a copy of the book. It's fun to read what companies are doing for their employees, and it will give you some ideas that you can probably easily implement (while other examples require a bit of heavy lifting) within your organization.

(Disclaimer: Stan sent me a preview copy of the book)

Finally, a book that provides real company culture examples.
By Tyson Adams
As an entrepreneur and startup consultant for many years, I've found it challenging when clients ask me specific questions about hiring, recruiting and retention practices. Such great questions right? How do you attract talent, retain that talent and create a happy culture? Well in 'What's Your Green Goldfish,' Stan Phelps has done an amazing job and finding real company examples. I'm sure that some of this information is available online but most of it seems like he had to really drill down on.... Probably contacting employees and people that work in these very companies. It was awesome getting a window into these companies and I really appreciated the short chapters that allowed me to read it as a faced paced guide instead of a long drawn out text book. I'm certain to use this for consulting small businesses as they grow and when talking to managers in medium sized companies. Thank you Stan!
