Written in a conversational style, Linking to the Past: A Brief Introduction to Archaeology, Second Edition, offers students a concise and entertaining introduction to archaeological methods. Author Kenneth L. Feder helps students relate to the study of the past and learn what it means to think like an archaeologist by using accessible examples drawn from daily life; he examines the evolution of the beer and soda can to teach about seriation, demonstrates how technology changes over time with an iPod, and introduces dendrochronology by discussing a tree that fell on his property during a storm. Employing an "ask-and-answer" approach, Feder leads students through a wide-ranging series of questions about how archaeologists find, recover, study, and interpret the material culture left behind by earlier peoples.
To give students an opportunity to think like archaeologists, the author offers interactive student exercises and slide shows (provided on the in-text CD). Linked to chapters in the text, the exercises on the CD include exploring a topographic map to see what features might support human habitation, translating radiocarbon dates into calendar years, and calculating the age at death of a sample of human beings by examining their skeletal features. The text is also enriched by additional pedagogical features including detailed study questions at the end of each chapter, an extensive glossary of more than 200 key terms, and suggestions for further reading. An Instructor's Manual on CD is also available.

Review

"Archaeologists are, or ought to be, storytellers, and Ken Feder is an accomplished raconteur. Linking to the Past is great fun to read because of the many engaging stories and anecdotes of the author's own fieldwork, laboratory research, classroom experiences, and other incidents it includes. This book is more likely to actually be read by students."--Eric Johnson, University of Massachusetts

If you enjoy personal information > educational material, then this book is for you.
By Amazon Customer
This book was a required reading for my Intro to Archaeology class, and similiar to the professor, I found it rather lack-luster. Much of the book could be omitted, as it is educational in ways the reader does not necessarily need. Like my prof, the author chooses to talk about himself and go on many tangents about what he has done, often unrelated to the material at hand. It is lengthly for no reason and I often found myself skipping entire pages because they were irrelevant to the topic being discussed.

Digging Up Treasure
By John Benedict
One persons trash is another person's treasure. Well archeology is the search for trash from the past...the archeologist's treasure. Sometimes just sticks, stones and bones, and other times really valuable treasure that puts the crystal skull to shame. Archeologists are actually on a quest for our roots in the past, roots that are all around us in the present, if we just know where and how to look for them. This is a great book for learning what archeologists do and how they do it. It is a fun read not at all like a typical text book.....it is written in a question and answer format, with lots of entertaining personal experiences by the author and his students during their adventures in sleuthing out the past--questing for archeology treasures. The best part is the interactive CD that comes with it containing zillions of color photos of archeology sites, methods and information. It is about as much fun as learning can get!

I am an avocational archeologist, surveying new archeological sites; and this book was written for me and the thousands of amateur, avocational, and want-a-be archeologists in the world. Thank you Dr. Feder!
