sorry but it's 2.5 stars for me. Rounding up cuz I like the series overall
By BookY
This final book was definitely my least favorite of the bunch. I can't believe I'm even saying this, but I was actually pretty bored throughout more than half of it (something I would never have thought possible with this series). There seemed to be a lot of pointless, I don't know...TIME, I guess, just passing. Time spent trying to escape places. It dragged and felt tedious to me.

And damn, it was so fricken depressing! It's not like I need my books to end with rainbows and ponies, but come on! *Spoilers* So great, yeah, the bad guy was finally defeated, but all the characters you've come to love over the course of 7 books are now either dead, deeply hurt or miserable. I mean, am I supposed to feel something OTHER than depressed? Or am I missing something here? I was also disappointed that Elise and James were just so broken throughout so much of this story -- the badass-ness that I've always loved about them was not brung in the same degree as in previous books (strange, seeing as the most important fight of all happens in this book, but ehh. It just wasn't all that exciting or awesome to me).

But. If you're this far in the series, there really is no question of whether you should read this book or not because OBVIOUSLY you need to, if nothing more than to finally have all your questions answered, which, thankfully, they are. And the writing is, as usual, top notch and I can definitely appreciate the care the author took in developing the entire overall story arc leading up to this final showdown with Elise.

All in all, this was still a kickass series that will appeal to anyone who likes strong heroines and stories with a darker twist.

What an epic ending to a wonderful series
By Nereid
So I started this book early in the morning and I have finally finished it at 6.35pm, I just could not put it down. From the first page of this deep and philosophical intro, it captured my interest straight away though the last line had me laughing out loud.
Initially I found the glimpses of past, present, past, present a bit confusing but I got used to it after the first couple of chapters. This book encapsulates just what this whole series has been about, a journey of self-discovery for Elise Kavanagh taking her back to the beginning revealing all those secrets that have haunted her and us. After all if the angels conspired against her, you would think she hasn't a snowballs chance in hell of surviving her fate yet Elise's enemies have always underestimated her determination to succeed.

Reading about her traumatic childhood gives you a glimpse into the Nature versus Nurture theory and Isaac certainly contributed to Elise becoming the Godslayer from the very beginning grooming her to kill from such a young age with a lack of emotion that was sometimes chilling to watch. Yet she inspired those that loved her and she redeemed herself in the most unlikely places cultivating feelings for others that were rarely expressed to her.

That first glimpse of James so many years ago made such an impression on Elise and little did she know it would set off a chain of events that would entwine their fates forever. If she could have foreseen the outcome would she still have chosen to fall in love with him and trusted him with her life, I wonder. I had mixed feelings about James throughout this book, I felt sorry for him at times because he was in an impossible situation but the fact that he gave Elise up just like that after finally granting her that fleeting moment of happiness, it was that much crueller of him to rip it all away from her so soon. I admired his devotion to trying to save her but she wouldn't have been in Eden in the first place if he had not given her up.

Having invested so much in this series and the characters I felt like I was there in the Garden of Eden with Elise while she was struggling to retain her grasp on reality and not succumbing to the illusion no matter how much she wanted to believe it. It certainly dispelled my beliefs about the Garden of Eden as it became a twisted copy of itself due to Adam's influence and gave me a less harmonious version to dwell on.

Old friends resurface on ever-changing sides and the Union is getting ready for the battle at hand but are ill prepared for what is waiting for them. Despite finally understanding what motivated Metaraon's quest for vengeance, I still did not think that the ends justified the means. What an epic ending to the Descent series and I am assured that the story of Elise and James will continue as there are so many stories left to write. Will she ever forgive the ultimate betrayal and get her HEA or is that just not in her DNA anymore? I am definitely a fan for life, loved it Sara.

Almost forgot to mention that I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review though I have been following this series for years now.

Such a good series -- I want so many more books!
By Carrie Williams
I am really not sure how I feel about this book. I guess I shouldn't have expected a happy ending (or even a sort of happy ending) but this one just left me... kind of depressed.

I was just coming off the high of the last book, where James was kicking ass and taking names, and then we get dumped into this book where it seems that both James and Elise are just a shadow of their formerly kick-ass selves. Elise is tortured and has feelings, James is acting like a sad puppy, and the only ones really kicking ass are their "sidekicks" in the form of Malcolm (one of my faves) and Nathaniel. Eventually we get some more Elise bad-assery, but it takes most of the book to get there. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy this book - every book that has Elise and/or James story in it will still capture my attention and keep the pages turning.

We learn all the answers to things that might have come up along the way in the series (even things I missed or was oblivious to). There were a lot of loose ends getting tied up, which always makes for a good "end of series" installment. Usually my reviews of end of series books involve a lot of questions that I still have for the author, but I can't think of a single one in this case.

I will miss the James and Elise we got to see along this journey and hope that some more installments in the spinoff series can get them back to a somewhat functional/dysfunctional relationship like they used to have. It is always really hard when you get the relationship to develop between characters in a book, only to have no idea where you wish it would go. Do I wish for a happy ending for Elise and James? Yes - but would that be in their characters? Probably not. Maybe I wish for a moderately happy ending for them in the form of a stable relationship, but still fighting all the big bads. I guess we'll just have to wait and see where this next book takes them.
