With Schwarzkopf: Life Lessons of The Bear, by Gus Lee

With Schwarzkopf is Gus Lee's remembrance of his mentor and friend H. Norman Schwarzkopf, and his firsthand account of how Schwarzkopf shaped his life. In 1966, Lee, a junior-year cadet at West Point, was bright, athletic, and popular. He was also on the verge of getting kicked out. Nearing the bottom of his class due to his penchant for playing poker and reading recreationally instead of studying engineering, he was assigned a new professor: then-Major Norman Schwarzkopf. Schwarzkopf's deeply principled nature and fierce personality took hold of the wayward cadet, and the two began meeting regularly and discussing what it meant to be a scholar, a soldier, and a man.

Lee's vibrant, witty narrative brings his more than forty-year relationship with Schwarzkopf to life. Readers get an inside look at West Point culture; they see Schwarzkopf's bristling anger with his rebellious pupil as well as his tenacity, intellect, and moments of surprising emotional warmth; and they watch as Lee starts to absorb his teachings. As he left West Point and took on more professional and personal roles, Lee approached every crisis or difficult decision by channeling his mentor. Over the years, Schwarzkopf's instilled values, wise counsel, and warm conversations shaped Lee and brought the two together in an unlikely friendship. In With Schwarzkopf, Lee passes along the lessons he learned so future generations can hear Schwarzkopf's important teachings.

Review
Gus Lee captures the essence of true mentorship in this book. Regardless of the professional discipline, Lee illustrates that caring leaders who nurture those under their charge will set the conditions for long-term success in any organization. – Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen

Gus Lee has written something special by bringing into focus the moral character, example, and strength of one of America’s greatest generals since WWII. General Schwarzkopf’s courage, love of his soldiers, energy, and infectious spirit will be forever remembered as an example of selfless and effective military service, and Gus Lee has captured that well in this touching book. – Gen. Barry R. McCaffrey, Ret.

Norman Schwarzkopf was the ultimate example of the teachings of West Point—Duty, Honor and Country. He believed in and lived those values. Everyone should read With Schwarzkopf to understand the meaning of integrity and patriotism. – Al Worden, Apollo 15 astronaut, USMA class of '55

A book that is just great. About a great man and a darn good read.
By Narut Ujnat
I saw this book, its plain cover and the subject of H. Norman Schwarzkopf. That name was enough to want me to read the book.

The author was West Point cadet that was exposed the Schwarzkopf at the Point when Schwarzkopf was assigned temporarily to teach engineering classes. The author himself tells a very interesting tale of being a sub-standard student in some subjects and his own encounters with the 1960's and changes in American society. Of course, West Point in many ways was an external institution so the Point became a bulwark of not changing (at least slowly).

The author speaks about the principle based life of Schwarzkopf and this was so interesting. As well, the leadership points made on the book are applicable to civilian life as well. Unlike some other leadership books (and this isn't strictly speaking a book on leadership by points, but I suppose by example (which makes the point of Schwarzkopf almost exactly).

The techniques are powerful, simple to learn but, of course, hard to implement. As with all changes of habit, change is difficult especially if not practiced. That what makes this a great book, the author finds success and implements the "Bear's" own values. I see why he wrote the book.

For a bit, I kind of didn't see where he was going with the book, but after continuing to read I found myself thinking this was a darn good read. In fact, I fell in love with the book and highly recommend it if you have an interest. It is very powerful and I learned quite a bit. In fact, I was writing a letter and some of the phrases dropped themselves into my professional communication.

As well, even though the Gulf War ended 25 years ago (!), I can still remember Schwarzkopf's press briefings. His combat fatigues, his metal pointer, his maps and his clear explanations. I also remember his good cheer and humor. In fact I remember his showing an attempt on Saddam and his convoy of cars. Schwarzkopf used his pointer and said "this is luckiest driver in Iraq and cars" as cars behind him explode. He was a great man, this book reinforces this point and it is a valuable and good read.

Highly recommended. It is unfortunate we have forgotten Schwarzkopf. He still has something to teach all Americans.

Excellent Real Life Lessons!
By Judah Levi
This is an excellent book by author Gus Lee. Lee was a cadet at West Point when he first met H. Norman Schwarzkopf - "The Bear" - and it clearly changed his life. At a turbulent time in American history, Schwarzkopf was a living embodiment of how to be a successful leader. His timeless principles, or lessons on life, are outlined in the book. There is much wisdom here.

More than leadership, however, this is also a touching story of a lifelong friendship/mentorship between the author and Schwarzkopf. I finished the book in one sitting because I could not put it down. It is an inspiring story and I thank the author for sharing it with us.

I would highly recommend this book for its outlines on the true principles of leadership and how leadership is taught, not genetic. I would also recommend the book about the power of finding positive mentors in your life who can help all of us be better individuals. Doing the "harder right" thing is tough, but it is the path to being an excellent leader and human being.

Five Stars!

It;s Always About Leadership
By Robert Enzenauer
WOW! What a great lesson for life. Gus Lee has memorialized his military and professional mentor - GEN Schwartkopf with a very personal memoir - describing the "Life Lessons of the Bear" that were the singular influence for Lee's success. Certainly in this book a reader can see the genesis of Lee's other great book - CHARACTER - THE BACKBONE of LEADERSHIP. According to "the Bear" "IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT LEADERSHIP. And the FIRST LEADERSHIP LAW (and ONLY LAW): DO THE HARDER RIGHT WHATEVER IT COSTS. According to the Cadet Prayer - Chose the harder right instead of the easier wrong - that's Lee's definition of CHARACTER, and I agree with him. Lee learned from Schwartkopf that "if we practice the behavior of character, we form habits of character." Besides being an excellent leadership primer, it is an equally valuable mentorship guide. Strong work, Gus Lee.
