Worldmaking: The Art and Science of American Diplomacy, by David Milne

A new intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the late nineteenth century to the present

Worldmaking is a compelling new take on the history of American diplomacy. Rather than retelling the story of realism versus idealism, David Milne suggests that U.S. foreign policy has also been crucially divided between those who view statecraft as an art and those who believe it can aspire to the certainty of science.

Worldmaking follows a cast of characters who built on one another’s ideas to create the policies we have today. Woodrow Wilson’s Universalism and moralism led Sigmund Freud to diagnose him with a messiah complex. Walter Lippmann was a syndicated columnist who commanded the attention of leaders as diverse as Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Charles de Gaulle. Paul Wolfowitz was the intellectual architect of the 2003 invasion of Iraq―and an admirer of Wilson’s attempt to “make the world safe for democracy.” Each was engaged in a process of worldmaking, formulating strategies that sought to deploy the nation’s vast military and economic power―or sought to retrench and focus on domestic issues―to shape a world in which the United States would be best positioned to thrive.

Tracing American statecraft from the age of steam engines to the age of drones, Milne reveals patterns of worldmaking that have remained impervious to the passage of time. The result is a panoramic history of U.S. foreign policy driven by ideas and by the lives and times of their authors.

Review

“David Milne tells the story of the hundred or so years when a sequence of public intellectuals shaped the discourse and practice of U.S. foreign affairs with confidence and lan―and guided America to its place as the world’s No. 1 power . . . That Mr. Milne succeeds, and brilliantly, is due in no small part to the vivacity and jargon-free clarity of his prose. But he also has a clever, thoughtful thesis that, while developed with great brio, he is careful not to overstate.” ―Richard Aldous, The Wall Street Journal

“[Milne] offers up detailed and often surprisingly moving portraits of nine prominent American foreign policy thinkers, from Alfred Thayer Mahan and George Kennan to Henry Kissinger and, finally, Barack Obama. Each portrait is rich in detail, contextualizing its subject’s understanding of America’s role in the world and offering a glimpse into the debates and dilemmas that have troubled policymakers for a century or more.“ ―Rosa Brooks, The Washington Post

“An account of American foreign policy at once dense with information yet written with such elegant lan that the theory and practice of statecraft becomes compellingly readable. Milne brings to life nine leading figures in the development of American thinking about the nation’s role in the world, weaving formative moments in their biographies with the policies they advocated.” ―David Luhrssen, Shepherd Express

“Remarkable . . . David Milne scrutinizes the work of nine Americans who, beginning in the late 19th century, shaped their country’s relationship with the rest of the world . . . His portraits are detailed, clearly the product of enormous amounts of research, and the result is a mini-encyclopedia about the philosophical foundations of America’s foreign policy . . . A valuable addition to the literature of diplomacy.” ―Philip Seib, Dallas Morning News

“[Worldmaking?‘s] careful historical accounts are rich in insight and provide extraordinary contextual breadth." ―Cameron Munter, Foreign Affairs

“Insightful.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New York Review of Books

“The overall arc of [Worldmaking] is fascinating, showing how the play of ideas and politics has worked out over more than a century, with some of the most critical episodes in modern history as main episodes in the plot . . . A well-documented, full-scale overview of some key makers of modern history.” ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A panoramic intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the nation's emergence as a major maritime power in the late nineteenth century to the present . . . Thanks to the detail and care Milne takes in describing his subjects' backgrounds, the more intriguing narrative that emerges is about the intimate yet fraught relationship between the academy and the levers of power. This is a timely, fascinating work.” ―Brendan Driscoll, Booklist

“This is an outstanding book. As an intellectual history of the drivers in U.S. foreign policy, it is the best one available. But it is also a superb overview of the lives of some of the key creators of America's position in the world.” ―Odd Arne Westad, S.T. Lee Professor of U.S.-Asia Relations, Harvard University

“A marvelous achievement. David Milne gives us not merely a richly textured and striking collective portrait of some of the most important figures in modern American diplomacy and statecraft; he also explains, as few others have, how the United States rose to its unrivaled position on the world stage--and what it means for international affairs today. An altogether splendid book.” ―Fredrik Logevall, Laurence D. Belfer Professor of International Affairs, Harvard University

“Is U.S. foreign policy a science or an art? In this beautifully written, uncommonly wise history, David Milne shows that it can be both. Ideas, as much as material forces or strategic necessity, shape America's approach to the world. Milne demonstrates beyond any doubt the importance of the intellectuals who put these ideas into action--for better or worse. A brilliant and important book.” ―Andrew Preston, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy

“Well-documented, insightful, and easy to understand, this analysis is a must-read for anyone interested in this topic.” ―Daniel Blewett, Library Journal (starred review)

One of the finest books on foreign policy I have ever read.
By David Becker
Mine's book uses deep analysis of the thinking of representative American foreign policymakers and public from the 1890s (Alfred Thayer Mahan) to the present (Barack Obama) to unravel the tangled threads of ideas and concepts that animated US responses to international crises from the war with Spain to the advent of ISIS. He points how their successes and failures have created analogies to later situations that policymakers used to help frame their recommendations--sometimes successfully, often not so much. From all this Milne concludes that Obama's "pragmatic realism" and it's attendant rejection of grand strategy is the best approach for securing American national interests and moral values in today's uncertain world, not least because it lacks the power and capacity to create a new world order in its own image.

Neocons and believers in American exceptionalism will dislike this book intensely. But they will not find it easy, if they remain true to the historical record rather than twist it to ideological purposes, to refute its arguments. An outstanding book and a must-read for students and practitioners of foreign policymaking.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of U.S. foreign policy
By Eric C. Petersen
Studiously researched, well written, and most informative covering the "big thinkers" on U.S. foreign policy for the last century-plus. A common theme is how much Washington has been invested in the past, obscuring a reasoned view of the future. One example might be the start of the Bush II administration when the Defense Policy Guideline was being drawn up: After the downfall of the USSR in 1991, the Clinton era saw restrained military budgets - the peace dividend, and, in Clinton's last year, a budget surplus. With the insertion of the Vulcans and neocons at the start of the Bush administration, a new threat matrix had to be invented to justify goosing up the military budget. Sundry were cooked up - missile defense against a renaissant Russia, the WMD threat from Saddam, etc. In an April 2001 meeting, Richard Clarke, the national coordinator for security infrastructure protection and national security, greatly irritated Wolfowitz for suggesting al-Qaida be put a the top of the threat list: In 1993 Ramzi Yousef had detonated a truck bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center hoping to topple one tower into the other, killing a quarter of a million. Subsequent embassy attacks in Africa and then the USS Cole clearly showed the terrorist group had the USA in its sights. To quote from the book: "Clarke replied that al-Qaeda plans major acts of terrorism against the U.S.," Clarke warned. "It plans to overthrow Islamic governments and set up a radical multinational Caliphate, and then go to war with non-Muslim states...They have published all of this and sometimes, as with Hitler in Mein Kampf, you have to believe that these people will actually do what they say they will do." Wolfowitz replied testily, "I resent any comparison between the Holocaust and this little terrorist in Afghanistan." Then again, LBJ didn't see any problems in defeating North Vietnam, a "pissant little country."

Understand the Threads of American Foreign Policy
By Jon Mertz
David Milne has written a book for the ages, one which will be studied to understand the linkages in foreign policy and the impact individuals have through different presidents. Worldmaking will become a key part of political science college courses, I believe. The foreign policy threads that weave through time are essential to understand.

There are a number of elements that I really like about Worldmaking. The first is how non-elected individuals have a sustaining influence on our foreign policy. Whether adversarial or complimentary in thought, certain philosophies continue to build or recapture attention and pursuit. Elected leaders make the decisions, but there is an underlying foundation of individuals who have influenced policies and actions.

The second is the tug between realists, idealists, and pragmatists The latter may still be developing while leveraging the other two. The stories of thought through our history show the art and science of foreign policy. A fascinating look at the challenges and interwoven nature of how to lead through world power shifts and challenges.

If you seek a solid understanding of American foreign policy, read this book. A greater awareness of the political thought behind decisions pursued will be realized. Like I said, I see this book being used in college classrooms, and it should be. More than this, anyone looking to understand foreign policy debates and considerations should spend the time to read this well-written book. It is time to raise our national awareness on foreign policy, a responsibility of being an educated citizen.

Another time, another world. Port Alveridge, nestled on the edge of the sparkling Esparrow Sea, is a town divided. Cats and Dogs who once fought ancient battles now live as uneasy neighbours in segregated districts, with the town ruled for the greater good of Felines. Into this hotbed of simmering rivalry steps an orphan hound - Arthur Snout - deposited on the steps of the Alveridge County Orphanage. A small, unhoundish loner, Arthur is bullied by the other houndlings. And their nickname of 'Lonely Dog' soon sticks. Lonely Dog has a special gift, however, a gift for music that crosses boundaries, styles, and even species...Torn from his new rough-and-ready family: from Old Rolph - orphanage headmaster, father figure and secret music-lover; from a childhood sweetheart - Kelzie, whom Lonely Dog loves more than anything; from Bronson - biker gang leader who protects him - Lonely Dog flees for his life to the hinterlands, where he unwittingly becomes the star of an outlawed late-night pirate radio show. With Bronson jailed and shadowy offshore Feline powers marshalling for a war that threatens to destroy all Hound-kind, Lonely Dog must return to Port Alveridge and face his destiny. Can a shy, reluctant hero - armed with nothing but his 'Houndsound' - change the course of Alveridgean history?

Love Warrior

The Newest Oprah Bookclub 2016 Selection

The highly anticipated new memoir by bestselling author Glennon Doyle Melton tells the story of her journey of self-discovery after the implosion of her marriage.

Just when Glennon Doyle Melton was beginning to feel she had it all figured out―three happy children, a doting spouse, and a writing career so successful that her first book catapulted to the top of the New York Times bestseller list―her husband revealed his infidelity and she was forced to realize that nothing was as it seemed. A recovering alcoholic and bulimic, Glennon found that rock bottom was a familiar place. In the midst of crisis, she knew to hold on to what she discovered in recovery: that her deepest pain has always held within it an invitation to a richer life.

Love Warrior is the story of one marriage, but it is also the story of the healing that is possible for any of us when we refuse to settle for good enough and begin to face pain and love head-on. This astonishing memoir reveals how our ideals of masculinity and femininity can make it impossible for a man and a woman to truly know one another - and it captures the beauty that unfolds when one couple commits to unlearning everything they've been taught so that they can finally, after thirteen years of marriage, commit to living true―true to themselves and to each other.

Love Warrior is a gorgeous and inspiring account of how we are born to be warriors: strong, powerful, and brave; able to confront the pain and claim the love that exists for us all. This chronicle of a beautiful, brutal journey speaks to anyone who yearns for deeper, truer relationships and a more abundant, authentic life.

Review

"A testament to the power of vulnerability. Glennon shows us the clearest meaning of 'To thine own self be true.' It's as if she reached into her heart, captured the raw emotions there, and translated them into words that anyone who's ever known pain or shame―in other words, every human on the planet―can relate to. She's bravely put everything on the table for the whole world to see."
― Oprah Winfrey (Oprah's Book Club 2016 selection)

"Love Warrior reaches a depth of truth and power and emotional gravity that is rarely seen in the world, and even more rarely spoken aloud. Glennon's story about the resurrection of her marriage (a tale of a woman daring to come into her body, and a man daring to come into his mind, and the two of them daring―with outrageous courage―to trust each other) is something beyond merely inspirational; it is epic. I think of this book as the vital, long-overdue, much-needed sister memoir to Eat Pray Love. Glennon lifts the roof off her whole house―her whole life―and examines everything, right out in the open. She has, indeed, become a Love Warrior. This book is an act of love and truth and generosity; it will change lives."
― Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love

"This is a book about what it means to be human―to wrestle with love, hurt, addiction, vulnerability, intimacy, and grace. Love Warrior blew me away. We can all find pieces of our own stories reflected in Glennon's powerful words. We are so lucky to have her courage and wisdom in the world. We need this kind of truth telling if we are ever going to find our way back to each other."
― Bren Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Rising Strong and Daring Greatly

"How can I do justice to this book? Moving and brilliant and funny and shocking and heartbreaking and inspiring, Love Warrior raises provocative questions about just what is possible for a person, a marriage, a family, a life. At the heart of this story is the insistence that we don't have to settle―we can explore our shadows, and we're not just going to survive it, but we're going to come out the other side a whole new person with new love, new hope, new strength, and maybe even a new marriage. This is a big, stunning, buoyant, honest, raw glimpse into the life of an astonishing woman, but it is also a punch in the face to anyone anywhere who believes that this is just how it is and it's not going to get any better."
― Rob Bell, New York Times bestselling author of Love Wins

"This elegant, moving memoir is about one woman's marriage but also much more than that. Glennon writes about a hunger for love that all of us feel and the only food that ultimately feeds us. She understands the unique relationship between spiritual and romantic love, and in finding one, she masters the other. Truly a wonderful book."
― Marianne Williamson, New York Times bestselling author of A Return to Love

"When I finished the last page of Love Warrior, I sobbed. I sobbed because I was in awe. Because I didn't want it to end. Because it made me believe more deeply in love, in humanity, in forgiveness, in God, in marriage. Glennon and Craig have invited us so far into the messy, beautiful, difficult insides of their hearts and lives, and what we find there is profoundly inspiring. This is a book that will change lives, change marriages, change the way we think and talk about what love really is."
― Shauna Niequist, New York Times bestselling author of Present Over Perfect

"A compelling story about self-discovery. Candid, brave, and generous."
― Kirkus Reviews

"Glennon Doyle Melton has mastered sharing her emotional life with the world, which she does nearly daily on momastery.com. Now she lays herself bare once again in Love Warrior, chronicling her struggles and the depths of her resilience in the darkest of times. A heroic achievement."
― Family Circle

"Melton is not merely relaying a narrative; she is offering her story with the hope and purpose of connection. Love Warrior ...draws you in close, as if the author is talking to you, and only to you. Listening to such a warm and emotionally intelligent author is a worthy investment in a course on difficult conversations. But I suspect that... what will win you over is all the 'terrible magic' that happens when things fall apart."
―New York Times Book Review (This text refers to the audio edition of Love Warrior)

Intensely voyeuristic
By Sally J. Parrott
So--I often love Glennon's writing. Love Momastery. Have contributed to Together Rising. Etc.

Honestly, I'm torn between two and three stars.

I read the book in under 24 hours (including time I really should have been sleeping). It was definitely gripping: raw, real, vulnerable. At times it was reminiscent of Ann Lamott in the best ways . . . though much less sprinkled with humor to lighten things up (not surprisingly, given what she's covering here). I highlighted a variety of passages because they were meaningful to me and well-phrased.

That said, ultimately, I felt like it was uncomfortably voyeuristic, especially about Craig. And I'm assuming (I'm sure hoping) he okayed the book. Even so, it's one thing for an author to share every intimate detail about her own life, but to discuss in such great detail incredible volumes of private information about her spouse . . . for me, it crossed a line where I ultimately felt I had intruded too much into what should have remained private between them.

Then the book ends with it sounding like they've reconciled and forged a strong marriage through their intense efforts. . . . Suddenly, the afterword has, "So I don't know if we'll stay married or not." And then I've read from Glennon's blog that they're actually divorcing now. They'll get no judgment on the divorce from me, but it makes me feel even more awkward having read the book, like this is a chapter in their lives that I should not be privy to in such great detail.

I had been greatly looking forward to reading it. I found it gripping while I read it. I'm not sure I should have read it. I feel weird about having read it.

I tried, but about midpoint of this book I started skipping so many pages I finally succumbed & let it go
By Lorraine Devon Wilke
I tried, I really tried, but at about the midpoint of this book I started skipping so many pages I finally just succumbed to my truth and let it go.

I am well aware that this a good writer, an excellent writer, and I do understand the genre of "survivor memoirs" and their ability to inspire and empower those for whom the narrative resonates. But for whatever reason, the style of the writing, with its almost breezy stripping of the writer's every thought, making each one as important and essential whether talking about yoga or alcoholism, became wearying to me. The sheer minute-by-minute-by-minute-by-minute account of the writer's marriage and the revelations that arose from it (and other revelation-inducing life events) became wearying to me as a reader. I left her sometime during the yoga section and left without knowing whether or not she and her husband ever had sex again or ever decided to give it a real go again -- and I feel sorta bad about that, as, no doubt, much went into this life and this book -- I just found the mountain of details wore me down too much to care.

I'm sorry to leave this review because I applaud anyone who transcends their demons to find a new and more self-preserving life. But maybe I've read too much of this genre at this point. Maybe the revelations and epiphanies that fascinated this writer to the point of microscopic examination have already been covered in other fine books I've read. I dunno. All I know is, she lost me along the way.

I wish her well, however it went, and congratulate her on both the success of her life and, is seems, this book. From what I can see it's having quite an impact and that's a good thing.

Excellent book for understanding Alzheimer's and for caretakers
By R. Gardner
I have read several books on Alzheimer's and this is the best. An excellent description of the neurological changes that occur in the brain, particularly regarding plaques and tangles. Also help suggestions for caretakers. An up to date and useful reference for anyone taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer's or for individuals in the early stages of the disease.

Review
"This excellent book is the first legitimate study of the meanings of 'public opinion' in the French Revolution and the rhetorical force with which the term could be deployed. It adds substantially to our knowledge of the political discourse of the Revolution and of the history of one of the key concepts in modern politics."
-Keith Baker, Stanford University
"This timely study significantly contributes to continuing conversations among historians about the emergence of a public sphere at the end of the eighteenth century. Cowans masterfully guides us through the constructions and deployment of public opinion as an instrument of political legitimization and delegitimization."
-Darline Gay Levine, New York University
"Informed by the work of Jurgen Habermas and Keith Baker, Jon Cowans extends the study of public opinion and its linguistic context into the revolutionary era itself. The author demonstrates the remarkable change in the concept of public opinion during the revolution by examining the language of speeches in the various assemblies, deliberations of the Jacobin Club in Paris, and commentary in assorted contemporary publications.."
-"American Historical Review, Kenneth Margerison, Southwest Texas State University

From the Back Cover
Although historians frequently invoke "public opinion" as a significant force, very few have engaged it in a critical and systematic fashion. And none has given serious treatment to the crucial role it played in the French Revolution, perhaps the most important moment in the development of modern political culture. To Speak for the People is a lucid and innovative study that fills this gap. Historian Jon Cowans adds a genuinely original voice to the debate over the problem of legitimacy during the Revolution, drawing on the works of Jurgen Habermas, Keith Baker, and Francois Furet. He carefully analyzes the use of terms like "public opinion", "the public", and "the people" in political debates, and tracks their changing meanings over the course of revolutionary events.

About the Author
Jon Cowans is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He received his Ph.D. in History at Stanford University. He has published articles on French political culture, cultural politics, and memory in French Historical Studies, the Journal of Contemporary History, and History and Memory. He teaches in the History Department of Rutgers University and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Public opinion is a democratic invention.
By Sonho Kim
Some scholars of public opinion regard public opinion as an ahistorical category. They define public opinion as a force or reputation which influence on the people's conducts (i.e., Noelle-Neumann, even historian Paul Veyne who studied Roman Empire), or on the king's policy against people (i.e., Lowell). Thus, they say that public opinion has existed over there and over time; even in monarchy, king was subject to public reputation. Unfortunately, this kind of idea continuously lingers in current research on public opinion whose analytical object is representative democracy.
In reality, it may be possible that people's idea, opinion, and public expression influenced on those of other people, or of governmental bodies. But, in mentality, public opinion is a peculiar historical phenomenon which emerged with the rise of democratic governance. As Cowans (2001) points out, it is just opinions that have an influence or pressure on the conducts of the people, but it was not public opinion (opinion publique). The transformation of opinion from a pejorative term to a rather positive one is due to opinion's marriage with the qualifier public (Ozouf). The marriage was not, however, made possible not only by the expansion of people's power-namely, the rise of the bourgeois public sphere , as Habermas argues, but also, and more significantly, by the change of political elite's mentality. Methodologically, thus, the origin of public opinion should be found in the discourse (rhetoric) of political elites rather than in hard facts. And the historical studies of French Revolution may provide many insights into our conceptions of public opinion.

The Universe Inside You: The Extreme Science of the Human Body from Quantum Theory to the Mysteries of the Brain, by Brian Clegg

Built from the debris of exploding stars that floated through space for billions of years, home to a zoo of tiny aliens, and controlled by a brain with more possible connections than there are atoms in the universe, the human body is the most incredible thing in existence.

In the sequel to his bestselling Inflight Science, Brian Clegg explores mitochondria, in-cell powerhouses which are thought to have once been separate creatures; how your eyes are quantum traps, consuming photons of light from the night sky that have travelled for millions of years; your many senses, which include the ability to detect warps in space and time, and why meeting an attractive person can turn you into a gibbering idiot.

Read THE UNIVERSE INSIDE YOU and you'll never look at yourself the same way again.

A Fun Way to Learn About Science
By Book Shark
The Universe Inside You: The Extreme Science of the Human Body From Quantum Theory to the Mysteries of the Brain by Brian Clegg

"The Universe Inside You" is a very engaging and educational book that takes us on an exploration of science of our bodies. By using our body as a laboratory the author cleverly takes us to other realms of science and helps us gain a better understanding of the world around and in us. Popular science writer Brian Clegg, provides the reader with a fun and interesting way to learn about the peculiarities of the human body by using the most current of scientific knowledge. I enjoyed this accessible and fun science book. This 224-page book is composed of the following nine chapters: 1. In the mirror, 2. A single hair, 3. Locked up in a cell, 4. Through fresh eyes, Marching on the stomach, 6. Feeling dizzy, 7. Two by two, 8. Crowning glory, and 9. Mirror, mirror.

Positives:
1. Great accessible science writing.
2. A fun science book.
3. A very engaging book, the author provides experiments and a link so that readers can test out firsthand the concepts presented.
4. Great use of converging sciences at an accessible level to explain the human body.
5. A fun-filled fact book. "A typical human head houses around 100,000 hairs, those with blonde will usually have about the average, and those with red hair rather fewer". The book is loaded with interesting factoids.
6. Human evolution...never boring.
7. A number of scientific discoveries inserted into an interesting narrative.
8. So much scientific territory was covered in such a brief book. Kudos.
9. The standard model of physics.
10. The significance of water in biology.
11. Fun with genetics. DNA, RNA, genes, epigenetics...
12. Basic quantum physics.
13. Optics for the masses...I see.
14. Cosmology for good measure.
15. Does a good job of debunking many long-held preconceptions in science.
16. Elementary chemistry.
17. Laws of thermodynamics.
18. The five key flavors detected by our taste buds.
19. A nice discussion about our senses.
20. The four forces that make it possible for our bodies to exist. Interesting.
21. Einstein's special relativity.
22. Thought-provoking ideas, time travel.
23. The fascinating world of the human brain. Memory, decision-making and so much cool stuff.
24. A very interesting look at evolution and some misconceptions.
25. An appendix that basically serves as a bibliography.

Negatives:
1. This book is intended for the masses. Scientists or people heavily involved in any of these fields will find the book fairly basic.
2. A couple of errors of little consequence. A repeated word, a misspell...but that was about it.
3. No links to the appendix section.

In summary, I really enjoyed this book. It's a fun science book that would make for a perfect gift for the layperson interested in science. I've read a number of science books as my further suggestions below will attest so a lot of what is presented in this book I am familiar with but I always learn something new and it also helped me better understand scientific concepts. Brian Clegg does a wonderful job of introducing readers to a number of scientific fields while using the human body as the template of the journey. A worthwhile and enlightening read for the masses, I recommend it.

Further suggestions: "50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True" by Guy P. Harrison, "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry A. Coyne, "The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution" by Sean B. Carroll, "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution" by Richard Dawkins, "Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body (Vintage)" by Neil Shubin, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, "Human: The Science Behind What Makes Your Brain Unique" by Michael S. Gazzaniga, "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts" by Carol Travis and Elliot Aronson, "Science Matters: Achieving Scientific Literacy" by Robert M. Hazen and James Trefil, and "SuperSense: Why We Believe in the Unbelievable" by Bruce M. Hood.

LOVED IT!
By Bila Artzi
After reading many popular science books, I could grasp some of the phenomena scientists know how about. Finaly I could understand the difference between weight and mass; I could visualize easily an atom and its particles; and more.

Highly recommended!

This book was just full of little facts about the human body that most people wouldn't know. Plus Brian Clegg is a genius. He has written many other books about different sciences.

Many examples are given throughout to aid in the understanding and execution of new concepts, sometimes making use of color to illustrate more complicated ideas. Square, diagonal, identity, and zero matrices are also discussed and explained at length with several examples. a good, VERY brief introduction
By S
I am taking intermediate statistics in business school. Almost no one in the class has had linear algebra, but the professor doesn't have time to get into the background. I have been getting hung up on details when the textbook and and software documentation, where matrices are described in the equations. This book (pamphlet, really) provides the equivalent of a half-hour lecture on the topic -- just enough to give me a framework for imagining what's going on in the equations.

It answers the following:

What is a matrix?
How does the notation work?
Which matrices can you add, subtract and multiply, and how do the calculations work?
What are diagonal matrices, vectors, identity matrices and zero matrices, and what are their special properties?

Note, the author explains that "the short answer" is that you can't do division with matrices, but that there's a thing called inversion where you multiply a matrix by its inverse. Inversion is what passes for division in the world of matrices. That's all you're going to get on that topic. So, if you need to know about what makes one matrix a factor of another matrix (e.g., if you're learning about factor analysis), this book isn't going to cover your needs. However, it's a clearly written, super-fast introduction for a good price. I read the thing in less than 30 minutes and feel like I have a decent enough handle on the topic to get back to reading my stats textbook.

Worth it
By Dwayne D
Excellent, concise book that teaches the basics. This is readable within an hour or two max. If you go through the examples with the author, you will understand all of the basic matrix algebra maths (I stress 'basic'). It does a great job of that for a very reasonable price.

A few immaterial grammatical errors, but the presentation style on my MBP Kindle is fantastic.

Just what I needed
By Roy E. Oetting
Essentially when you get done you know all the identities for matrix operations. It is taught in a straight forward manner and you get to do some problems as you go. Now that I've read it tomorrow I will do a self test by redoing the problems and after that I'll have a quick matrix reference booklet. It is short so microwave some macaroni and cheese poor yourself a nice red wine sit back and enjoy (unless you are under 18).

Weapons of the Gods: How Ancient Alien Civilizations Almost Destroyed the Earth, by Nick Redfern

In 1945, the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki became the first and last victims of the atom bomb, the most destructive man-made force our planet has ever known.

Or were they just the latest in a long line of Armageddon-level events? Is it possible that our civilization is, in reality, just one of many? Did previous cultures blossom, develop, and thrive, only to destroy themselves, tens or hundreds of thousands of years ago, with the same atomic technology?

These are the controversial and thought-provoking questions at the heart of Nick Redfern's Weapons of the Gods, which argues that many ancient civilizations cracked the secrets of the atom, only to become the victims of its awesome, terrifying power. Still others may have been destroyed by hostile aliens with their own nuclear arsenals.

Where is the evidence? The answer is shockingly simple: it's everywhere. It's just a matter of knowing where to look for it, from the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the ancient Pakistani culture of Mohenjo-daro, Pakistan, to the Lonar Crater in India and the revelations in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, two ancient Sanskrit texts that describe nuclear warfare thousands of years ago.

Amazingly Balanced
By Moon Cat
Most unusual for a ancient alien book, Redfern goes over the evidence cited in most books and traces it to its source. In some cases it turns out to be quite wobbly but in other cases there is firm support for the possibility of a ancient atomic war. Again the author takes time to present the current academic explanation as contrasted with the various other theories floating around. He also reviews the "proof" for these viewpoints citing current archaeological discoveries, some that I was not aware of. Was especially surprised by the vitrified Scottish forts which had walls of fused stone. Ancient texts are examined and the consistency of a heavenly war being fought by God's, Angels or Kings is a thread that weaves through many ancient people's religious books. A fine work of research and a valuable addition to the ancient civilization destroyed, possibly by aliens, history theory.

Another Redfern Winner
By Violet Bunny
I was already familiar with most of the content of this book but enjoyed it anyway, as Redfern is fun to read. There undoubtedly were nuclear explosions on this planet millenia ago due to the wrath of ancient alien 'gods.' The resulting vitrified glass pebbles found at certain sites around the world are of the same composition as those found at the Trinity test site in New Mexico in 1945, when the 'first' atomic bomb was detonated. Another of Redfern's books that only took me 2 days to read - good thing there's so many of them, as he's such a prolific writer!

Deceptive and disappointing
By alman5555
Dissappointing, and somewhat deceptive. The books cover is very dramatic, and one expects some far out story from the past. This book is more of a debunking of ancient astronaut theories than an original story. The author does admit that although he believes some of these stories, the evidence hasn't been presented well. The whole ancient astronaut theory is pure speculation anyway, and some might say pure bullcrap. Ive read many of Nick Redfern's books and enjoyed them, but this one is disappointing.
