About the Author
Klaus Krippendorff (PhD in Communication, University of Illinois, Urbana, 1967) is Professor of Communication and Gregory Bateson Term Professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. Besides numerous publications in journals of communication, sociological methodology, cybernetics, and system theory, he authored "Information Theory, Structural Models for Qualitative Data", a "Dictionary of Cybernetics", edited "Communication and Control in Society", and coedited "The Analysis of Communication Content and Developments and Scientific Theories and Computer Techniques".

Besides supporting various initiatives to develop content analysis techniques and continuing work on reliability measurement, Klaus Krippendorff's current interest is fourfold: With epistemology in mind, he inquires into how language brings forth reality. As a critical scholar, he explores the conditions of entrapment and liberation. As a second-order cybernetician, he plays with recursive constructions of self and others in conversations; and as designer, he attempts to move the meaning and human use of technological artifacts into the center of design considerations, causing a redesign of design - all of them exciting projects.

A great resource for designer and design researchers

I was using Krippendorffs Semantic Turn over the past two years in my curriculum to teach design theory in different context, at Universities in Europe and North America and the response of the students was always great.
I appreciate Kripendorff's deep insight into contemporary developments and the discourse formation in design and the models he proposes to use.
His trajectory of artificiality, he has developed in his book is a great metaphor to frame and conceptualize some important developments in the design professions. I could imagine, because also some students told me, that this book is in some parts complex to understand, but it is also one of the exceptional readings on a theoretical which reframes the design professions for the future. I think it is a must for designers and the once who teaches design, even if we don't agree with all the statements made. It is also a great starting point to get involved in a theoretical design discourse.

Riveting and inspiring!

Heartwarming collection of real life sports stories. The author has thoughtfully curated the collection to includes stories from a wide variety of sports, each of which highlights the human being at the core of a highly trained athlete. This book reminded me about why I used to love sports ( as a spectator) until all the sordid scandals and "win-at-all-costs" mentality turned me off, and also managed to change my opinion about certain sports personalities. It highlights the sportsmanship in sports, but doesn't just stop there. What is truly inspiring about this book is that it ties those moments on a sports field to life in general. The author's brilliant choice of quotes at the beginning of each chapter come from a wide variety of sources, are very apt for the situations, and highlight the universality of the experience being described. The author uses a simple, lucid style that brings the event to life for the reader, and strikes that perfect balance between vividly conveying the emotional impact of the situation, without veering into being overly dramatic or maudlin. All in all, an excellent read. I could not put it down till I finished it. This book can be enjoyed by a wide range of age groups but especially middle to high school aged kids. Even reluctant readers will like this book because it is fast paced, simply narrated, and grabs your interest. And most important of all, it will get the reader to think about values and what it means to be a true hero, without being preachy in the least.

I read this manuscript with great scrutiny for I have been a pioneer, promoter and defender of prophets and prophetic ministry for 55 years. I can honestly say that Jennifer covers some very delicate subjects with sound wisdom and integrity.

The integrity of prophets is as important as the accuracy of their prophecies. People need to know that there are true and false prophets and what makes them true or false. There are also those who are called to be prophets but who are immature, lack sound biblical knowledge, have more zeal than wisdom, or who are presumptuous.

Thank God there are now numerous mature prophets with godly character and pure motives who are being true representatives of Jesus Christ, the Prophet of all holy prophets and prophetic ministries. Jennifer LeClaire's book, in my estimation, is one of the best books on prophecy available. Very informatively, she writes as one who believes, understands and participates in prophecy.

The Heart of the Matter

It was by "accident" that I stumbled across this book, and "coincidence" that I had been conversing with God about the very things addressed within it (as they pertain to me and my weaknesses, stumbling blocks and fears; my situation;...as well as my own observations and concerns regarding the prophetic movement.) I have been frustrated, suddenly finding myself in a place with no pastoral covering and in the midst of a body that...well, let's just say I've been feeling mighty misunderstood, disoriented and, OK, fearful.(Poor me.) God is so faithful! Through Jennifer LeClaire's careful application of Scripture He has used this book to help answer my questions, confirm what I know, and encourage me in the right direction. I welcome everything written in The Heart of the Prophetic. While recognizing that we live in a time of grace, my greatest fear still is that I would claim to speak for God when in fact I'm speaking to somehow satisfy myself. This book addresses that issue and others from every conceivable angle. Concerns boldly confronted are: political correctness, presumptions (personal opinions,) self-will, control, greed, merchandising, deceit, judgmentalism, and stubborn rebellion. The issues discussed in each of the chapters are all closely related, of course, because at the heart of the matter is the hazard of the intercessor/prophet serving one of those other "gods" - Self, or Satan.

Jennifer's writing style is clear, direct, and conversational. She manages to meet the monster head-on without turning off the reader. (Well, I wasn't turned off, but then I was hungry to hear what was being said.) I encourage everyone called as an intercessor/prophetic-intercessor/prophetic/prophet to read this book. If we don't find ourselves humbly inviting God to search our hearts as we move through the various chapters, the only appropriate response would be to cry, "Woe! Have mercy, Lord!"

Jennifer is a mighty resource and every revelatory insight she has comes directly from the spirit of God, not only do I love this book, I can't wait to get my hands on the other books she has, she has been a huge reason I can understand the trials and things I face in life, her wisdom brings life and clarity to many questions I have, not only do I recommend her books, I consider her a spiritual mentor and she doesn't even have to have an intimate relationship with me. In, The Heart of the prophetic she exposes the Jezebel spirit, I have seen the prophetic ministry get hi-jacked in many areas and her book helps me recognize the spirit, I know exactly how to position myself for intercession because of the insight she offers. The Heart of the Prophetic She gets a 10 stars review from me!!!

Need a Heart Check-up?

It was no accident that I came accross Jennifer LeClaire's "The Heart of the Prophetic" I am not sure how I found Jennifer's website but I was very interested in what she had to say iin her articles on there. Jennifer has written a number of books and they all are books that I can see myself ordering. This book was more than a resource on the pitfalls that arise in the prophetic ministry. As I read each chapter it was though the Holy Spirit was nudging me to repent at every corner.

When you read this book,you may be tempted to think, "This Chapter is not about me" and read without taking notice of all the chapters in the book. You may be tempted to think of other prophets that you know and apply the pitfalls mentioned in this book to them, whilst considering yourself pure. But this is not why Jennifer wrote this book. She does a broad sweep of the pitfalls that confront a modern prophet and you should if you are human recognise some of them in your life as a prophet or prophet in training. I have been for instance a self willed prophet, a Jezebel controlled prophet, a merchandising prophet as well as others.

The book is a breath of fresh air and it is really liberating to read and seek the Lord to clean you from the inside out as you cover each of the extensive chapters. I thank the Lord for Jennifer and he dedication to Truth in the prophetic and in all her endevours. I encourage you to check out her author page and the other books that she has written.

Deceptively Simple

Almost every pro guitarist, and a lot of amateur ones, know the Mickey Baker books. A number of jazzers and rockers started out with them- Pete Townsend has said that he learned his chords from Mickey. This was the only specifically jazz oriented guitar method available back in the 50s when Mickey wrote it, and it's been in print pretty much continuously since then. That by itself should should tell you a lot. A lot of guitarists looking for a good jazz self-study course have looked at this book, and wondered if there was really much to be learned from few simple chord exercises and a few dozen riffs. Sure, there were a lot of good chords to be learned from it, but beyond that...?

Actually, there is a tremendous amount of information to be found in this book, but only if you follow Mickey's directions. He doesn't give you a lot of why- just "do this until you have it down." But if you do that, you'll find yourself internalizing a lot of important rules and skills that other teachers spell out. Those hokey sounding chord progressions that Mickey wants you to memorize and transpose to other keys are actually teaching you all the standard jazz substitutions. Mickey does spell out some of these rules in the second half of the book, but if you've done your homework you'll find that it's much easier to apply these rules to soloing if you've actually internalized them than if he had just told you that you could use a Lydian or Aeolian sub for a dominant chord in a 12 bar blues.

The second half of this book is all about learning to solo, and a lot of non-readers have looked at it, and been put off by the lack of tab. But you don't need reading skills beyond that absolute minimum to use this book. Mickey has provided all the fingerings below the staff for each exercise. It may be a little unfamiliar at first, but by the time you finish this book- and it'll take a year to really do it right- you'll find that you have some pretty good reading skills, too.

Even though it was written back in the 1950s, the riffs and chords Mickey teaches sound just as hip today. Some guitarists will quibble with some of Mickey's choices, or his chord names, but it's more a matter of opinion than a fault in the book. For example, a lot of contemporary guitarists would play something like Bm7-Bb7-Am7... rather than Mickey's straight descending m7ths (Bm7-Bbm7-Am7..) today, but that's something the student will learn just by listening to guitarists today.

In short, if you have some basic guitar skills- you know a few dozen chords, and you can strum along- and you're confused by all the different jazz guitar books out there- this is the one you should start with. If you follow his directions, practice every exercise until you've memorized it, and written out and practiced all the transpositions, too, by the time you finish the book you'll be able to comp and put together a simple solo over most any jazz tune.

[n.b.- this edition is the original book as printed in the 1950s. There's another edition with a blue cover that was edited and re-typeset in the 70s, but that edition contained a number of errors that were introduced in the editing. This is the one you want.]

Not for beginners, but great for novice guitarists looking to stufy jazz techniques.

I'm returning to jazz guitar study after nearly 20 years away. When I was learning, in a college focused on jazz, this was standard fare. I learned on this book. The first part of the book is focused on chord study. There are tons of great jazz chords and basic, simple, progressions to learn and apply those chords. The reader is learning how to substitute jazz chords in a very simple and repetitive way. The second part of the book is focused on scales, various runs and riffs and soloing.

There is no tablature, and I think that is best. It is in every guitarists best interest to learn how to read music. it's very easy and will only help the studying guitarist advance in the long run.

This is not an appropriate book for a complete beginner. As a guitarist who had been playing for over 10 years, but with no jazz experience, this book was challenging. 20 years later, with a rusty music degree, it's keeping me on my toes. Not impossible, and a great motivator. I'm feeling great about reinforcing my core knowledge and technique as well as refreshing forgotten ones.

If you complete this and the 2nd Baker book, you're well on your way to being able to hold your own in a jazz setting, provided you're also listening to jazz and playing along to records and with other musicians.

I feel this would be a great folllow-up to the Berklee Modern Method for Guitar books.

Excellent jazz chord primer for guitar...

I purchased this volume (and volume 2) 6 months ago or so and have been steadily working through the lessons. As for my skill, I'm an intermediate player with a solid chord vocabulary and a fair understanding of jazz harmony. Like most jazz guitar players, I want to know more. Aside from the low cost ($7.95), what most inspired me to consider these books was the "subtle" endorsement given them by Robben Ford in his "Art of Blues Solos" instructional video (which I enjoyed too). Ford stated that he worked through Mickey Baker's book when he first started playing guitar and... well, Ford is an awesome player!

Lesson 1 starts with Baker diagramming 26 chord forms and telling the reading to get familiar with them. The book does not use tab for showing chords, but the chord diagrams Baker provides are straight-forward. I suspect beginning players should want to break the chord forms down, by note, to learn which dotted fret is the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc., for any given chord. The lessons that follow ask the reader to play melodies using specific groups of the 26 chords. Also, for some lessons, Baker asks the reader to transpose progressions from previous lessons into new keys and then practice playing them. As the lessons progress, Baker methodically introduces the reader to more chord forms, to single-note lines, chord vamps, progressions, and more... and more... and more. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are 52 lessons in volume 1, and so there is lots to learn.

The Baker books are simply designed for the reader to work at a comfortable yet steady pace, not become overwhelmed by discussions of theory, and to lean to play some cool sounding jazz melodies on the guitar. Beginning guitarists will likely have more difficulty but that would be due to a lack of mechanics than with anything else. With sufficient finger and chord exercises, playing troubles will diminish.

Hornbacher, who detailed her struggle with bulimia and anorexia in Wasted, now shares the story of her lifelong battle with mental illness, finally diagnosed as rapid cycling type 1 bipolar disorder. Even as a toddler, Hornbacher couldn't sleep at night and jabbered endlessly, trying to talk her parents into going outside to play in the dark. Other schoolchildren called her crazy. When she was just 10, she discovered alcohol was a good mood stabilizer; by age 14, she was trading sex for pills. In her late teens, her eating disorder landed her in the hospital, followed by another body obsession, cutting. An alcoholic by this point, she was alternating between mania and depression, with frequent hospitalizations. Her doctor explained that not only did the alcohol block her medications, it was up to her to control her mental illness, which would always be with her. This truth didn't sink in for a long, long time, but when it did, she had a chance for a life outside her local hospital's psychiatric unit. Hornbacher ends on a cautiously optimistic note—she knows she'll never lead a normal life, but maybe she could live with the life she does have. Like a horror-movie sequence that threatens never to end, Hornbacher’s testimony grabs and doesn’t let go through episode after episode of bulimia, substance abuse, and promiscuity. Mania with its attendant voices plagued Hornbacher ever since she can remember. Extreme mood swings finally led to diagnosis at 24 of bipolarity. Possibly genetic, given a family history rife with anecdotes implying mental instability going back for generations, Hornbacher’s bipolar disorder is a label she initially rejected, though she responded to medication for it. She married, and threw herself into overworking that triggered recurrences of the mood swings, two years of repeated hospitalization, then electroconvulsive therapy. A strange read.

I eagerly purchased "Madness" after its release; "Wasted" was one of the most compelling memoirs I've ever read and Hornbacher is a fascinating and incredibly talented writer. After reading about a third of the book, I found myself struck by the disparity between Marya Hornbacher the writer and Marya Hornbacher the person.

Marya the writer is thoughtful and shockingly insightful; she is hyper self-aware, almost to the point of being self-obsessed, able to write chapter after chapter of intricate prose about her own history, thoughts, and actions.

Marya the person seems to lack any self-awareness. She acts on impulse alone, jumping from one whim to the next, rarely stopping to pause and think about what she's doing. She is sucked into her own emotions and compulsions easily; she easily slips back into patterns drug & alcohol habits, compulsive spending, self-mutilation, sex-addicted behavior.

Both Maryas are interesting, and make for a hardy memoir, but there's something missing in the writing. "Madness" is extremely detached, written as if "Marya" is a fictional character being written about by an impartial observer. It's often hard to believe that Marya the writer actually did the things Marya the person did. There's plenty of pretty prose, plenty of insight, but there's no connectivity. Hornbacher is a great writer, but she is a clinical and analytical one. Sometimes that works in a memoirist's favor (see, "Darkness Visible," "Girl Interrupted") but it's just sort of strange to read someone writing about themselves in a cold, mathematical, detached sort of what when they are trying to relate periods of extreme passion & mental illness. She'll write about an epic mental breakdown or temper tantrum, but there is no fervor in the narrative that pulls you into the writer's mind & into the moment with her. I mean, say what you will about Elizabeth Wurtzel (another person who has published multiple books concerning herself & her struggles with mental illness), but she has a deeply idiosyncratic and conversational writing style that makes it very easy to imagine her acting in the temperamental, selfish, impossible, moody ways she describes. Marya Hornbacher seems like two different people in her books. It worked well in "Wasted," in which she discussed her detachment from her body and her emotions, but it just falls a little flat in "Madness." She is describing CAPSLOCK EMOTIONS, but they don't feel CAPSLOCK to the reader.

"Madness" also could have used some heavy-duty editing; the book's organization is difficult and, well, a little disorganized. And she does have a habit of presenting the same ideas and revelations with different wording over & over again. A lot could have been cut, which would have made "Madness" a more impactful read. I found it hard to get through at times. You know what they say about brevity being the soul of wit? Yeah, it's true.

None of this is to imply that "Madness" is a bad book. Far from. It's just a bit of a difficult and frustrating read at times. When it is good, it is really really good. And even when it's bad, it's not horrid.

A must read for anyone who loves someone that is bipolar

I wish I had read this so much sooner. The clinical descriptions on medical and psychology websites or in the same kind of books do NOT begin to help anyone understand what is going on inside a bipolar person's mind. My fiancee was bipolar and it was hard for me to comprehend what he was going through esp when he talked about voices he heard. I found this book on Amazon along with I'm Not Crazy, Just Bipolar and had just started reading this one first when he passed away from lung cancer. To have know so much sooner what this book taught me, would have helped me help him better so much more than I was.

Understanding the madness

This book was important to me in nursing a broken heart as I had dated a bipolar man for two years and eventually we broke up due to his abrupt and extreme mood changes and his substance usage. I know that bipolar is a difficult diagnosis to have but I didn't realize the full reality of what it meant until coming upon this book. My boyfriend used to get so angry at me for walking slow, driving slow (the speed limit), or not doing anything up to his speed. In the book, the author explains that when she was in manic phase, EVERYONE seemed slow and it was excruciating to her to tolerate her perceived "slowness" of others as the thoughts inside her head were moving in warp speed. When my boyfriend was in his depressed stage he would literally disappear, not answer the phone, not talk to me, and drink. The author explains how devastating the depressive cycle was to her and how impossible it was to get up out of bed during this time, in fact she would use cocaine to get her going. She explains the relationship of the manic depressives cycles to substance usage. At times I would try to talk to my boyfriend about his "cycles" which were predictable and he would stare at me and act like he didn't know what I was talking about, which I couldn't believe, since it seemed so obvious. But in this book, the author explains her surprise as an adult when a psychologist asked her about how fast she cycled (changed moods) and she didn't know what he was talking about. To her, the moods were random and came and went without explanation. In fact the psychologist had to explain to her what a "cycle" was. She was so unaware about herself.
At the end of our relationship, my boyfriend found another woman in less than a month's time which truly hurt my feelings, and yet the author also reveals that after the breakup of her marriage she had found a new husband and moved across country in less than a month. Impulsivity, another aspect of bipolar manic phase.
Reading this revealing autobiography helped me to understand what demons my ex boyfriend was wrestling with and helped to heal some of my hurts that I had taken his behaviors personally and realized it wasn't like that. This book will not save our relationship as me and my ex have both moved on, but I applaud the author for her candid writing about a mental state that affects many of the most creative and loving people. It will also help me know ahead of time what I might be getting into should I ever be attracted to a man with bipolar again, which I actually don't think will happen, unless he is willing to take medication to treat it, which my ex expressed he did not want to do. Still, I think this is a good book to help understand friends and loved ones. I recommend it.
